I have a frag of favia, and the tentacles use to be out all the time and it was pretty fat... suddenly today evening after coming back from work, i saw it shrunk and no tentacles out at all.... here is a pic:

if u see the white part on the border, u can see how fat it use to be as there is no algae on that part....

The pic is hard to see. You were too close when you took it. Notice how the frag behind it is in sharper focus? Where the gravel is less blurry is where your focal plane is.

Has it lost color or just size? Too much light can cause tissue shrinkage though it's often accompanied by a loss of color. Out of whack water parameters can also cause unhappiness. I would check your alk, ca and mag to verify those are where they should be.

Obviously water quality is an issue. But let's for a brief moment assume there is something else going on here. How much flow is directed at this coral? They do like water circulation, not to be confused with sitting directly in front of a power head stream. Try moving it to a more protected area. One that is a balance of light and shade, good circulation but not direct flow. Also try target feeding. This can be tedious so I suggest feeding your fish first. One thing I have heard great reviews on are lps pellets. They seem a bit pricey however so you may consider alternative foods...

Some LPS will do this every so often for a day or two. My favia do not extend there feeders constantly and many of my LPS will shrink up now and then only to extend back out a day or two later (sometimes even fatter than before). Not saying something isnt wrong, just that this isn't all that uncommon. At least IME.

How long have you had this coral and how long has it been in that spot?

hey guys thanks for the replies, "greech" its true, it opened up after a day, again closed for a day and now open since long. if see sometimes the feeders are extended too much, sometimes shorter. and yes it does look fat. its been growing at normal rate. i feed aquapharm sea plankton once everyweek 5ml (i dont target feed). pods are growing like crazy but in the sump. i just have 1 acro with this hard coral. rest are all softies. im new to stoney. acro is growing well too but only at the bottom. so lets see.

You looked your frag in the night?

Often, it going out your tentacle all the time when the light turn off.

If the tentacle doesn´t going out in the night, you will be must worry!

How is your KH? LPS doesn´t like Kh high

I just started my tank this past summer and got my first favia about 2 months ago. My favia frag shrinks when I cut off my water flow (i.e. for water change). It looks like skin stretched tightly over its skeleton. When the flow is back and the lights are on, it swells up very well. Is it possible that too much shrinkage when the water is off is an indication that I am not feeding it enough? I looked at a great thread on coral rescue in which damaged LPS corals were target fed 3 times per week. Is this a standard feeding schedule for a favia in good health?
