How did the baby come out of there? That's very interesting.

The colony just budded off 2 polyps. In the actinic shot you can see 2 small polyps that are "poofing" out of the surface. Over the course of a few of weeks the connecting tissue stretched and got longer and thinner. I finally got tired of watching it dangle there like a loose tooth and just snipped it off before it blew away and got lost in the rock work. I thought I had other pictures of the progression but I can't find them. :(

Here's a new one.

Here's my Australian prism coral.

The polyps are huge. Is this considered a favia? If not, what is it?

I have one just like that and was told it is called the crown of jewels favia......I have mine in low light and med flow...I was told that is the best way to keep the yellow/green on the edges of the polyps. I have since moved it to lesser lighting but here is a pic a week after I got it......If someone on here knows differant please tell me so I can get the best lighting spot for it without losing the colors....

wow that is such sexy one there.:eek2: if your colony is ever fragged i will happily trade you for anything but the pug.lol

mathew. dallas was fun you have good people out there. i came with the faviasm, aftermath sunset blues my new aussie one was fragged hopping for ya to drop by. not many people appreciate these lil polyp wonders i guess. ha ha they liked the acans better.

Audio101: That is DROP DEAD GORGEOUS! Not to mention unique looking LOL. Provissimo!
Richard: Did you PM me? I guess I didn't check my messages last week. I didn't know that this was THE weekend you'd be here. DARN! But the holidays are coming up & getting off for a weekend is getting harder by the *beep* day. I'm sorry I missed you. But maybe its a good thing.. My tank ain't doing so hot right now. Two corals are on the way out, including that Platygyra I posted ( *BEEP* I loved that one!). Seems to be a serious phosphate problem. I'm having a hair algae & Cyano revolution now. Frankly, my tank looks almost as bad as when it was just LR & cycling. I'm going to have to scrap my skimmer & invest in something for mucho dinero. This whole thing is also why I'm a bit reluctant to show new pics. ( aside from my obvious lack of photo skills..). The tank is getting a bit to close to crashing for my nerves right now. But my 3 Favia colonies are doing relatively well. Does anyone have any tips? I'd hate to have my first & successful reef crash after 3+ years of operation including two moves, one major. I'm getting nervous.
Still, I had looked forward to seeing some of you all in person, would have been great to see some of your frags. And of course, I'd of bought a couple against my better judgement.
Ianawane: That is also a spectacular Favia, nicest single color one yet..

Sincerely,
Matthew

What do you guys feed them to make them BIG?

Matthew, you should have come to the Coral Farmers Market. It was a lot of fun to just hang out even if you didn't buy anything. Plus there were door prizes for free, and DFWMAS gave away some schwag all day long.

For Phosphate, I use Blue Life's Phosphate Control. You do need a good skimmer (or the very least a nice clean filter sock) to capture the flocculant out of the system.

For Cyano, Blue Life's Red Slime Control, but again you need a good skimmer.

For Photography, come to our club's meeting this month. It will be all about photography.

This weekend is the Dallas Tank Tour.

And in a couple of weeks, the DFWMAS Frag Swap!

There, you are out of excuses. Time to apply what you've learned. ;)

mark. and mathew. i am waiting to get more info on the next wave event. i want to see what all of you locals out there got in those multiple tanks. we will see.
anyone notice that this thread is one fire again.lol

da6d2003, SICK coral!

How long did it take that frag to grow into that colony?

...Put me in line too :D

Area 51 Favia? Is it a secret codeword or something? Or a Favia that doesn't exist- OFFICIALLY! LOL
Melev: Mark, did you not notice that I work on these weekends & requests for them off are seldom granted? So, no I still have excuses. Now, if I could come down with a MILD case of Flu, where I wasn't completely bed-ridden, I might just make it.
Thanks, on those suggestions. The skimmer I have now is CRAP, barely a toy. It was an emergency measure after the move in '07 when my top notch skimmer ended up DOA when the tank was turned back on. MY LFS has a couple, but one is for sumps ONLY, the other is a big brother of what I already have. Though it might be worth it. All my coral fatalities happened AFTER the previous skimmer crash. Obviously, a clue..
I have a plain filter for running activated carbon, would the sponge in that work? Frankly I'm tired of cleaning this thing 2-4 times a week!
Richard: Yep, finally we managed to ressurect the thread, I was begining to worry for a few days..

Matthew

Matthew, you can attend our club meeting on Wednesday night Nov 12 for the Photography presentation. The info in on the front page of www.dfwmas.org about time and location.

What is your skimmer? What skimmer are you going to get next, and when?

What filter are you using to run carbon specifically?

Area 51 Favia

Yeah! It's always satisfying to see something starting to get shared, I know the guy that bought it had a relatively small tank so it was just a matter of time before he trimmed the colony down a bit =)

Did you trade him something?
