fin rot in established reef

recently added a foxface to an established reef(no quaratine---I know) and developed case of fin rot which spread to a purple tang. Fish are eating, tank conditions and water are OK. Any suggestions on in tank treatment. Capture is out of the question really. Any safe additives or medicated foods? Appreciate any advice or experience. P. Wilson

pwilson,

Any chance of you posting a picture? Is it just the tail fins involved? Fin rot, without a prior injury is actually very rare. I don't know of any antibiotics you could safely add to the water. There are some "tonics" out there, but I won't use them myself. Jungle Products makes a medicated food containing sulfathiazole and nitrofurazone. I've never tried it, so I can't comment on its efficacy.

Hi Jay:
The fox face may have had slightly irregular tail noticed after adding to tank. Definitely spread to purple tang thereafter. Perhaps some fin nipping going on that I dont see but I dont think so. The dorsal and ventral fins on the tang are also involved. Tried to upload a couple pictures but too much info on them to upload. Ill try to figure it out and resubmit. Hope things are going well at the zoo. Dr. P. Wilson

pwilson,

I've found it easiest to upload the photos to photobucket and then link the image to your posting here. Conversely, I think that you might be able to email them directly to me through the system here, but then you would lose out on advice from other people here.

The thing about fish aggression is that if you are talking a couple of "tag marks" on a fish over a 24 hour period, the chances of you actually seeing it happen is minimal based on the amount of time most people spend viewing their fish....

If you have trouble resizing the pictures, email them to me and I'll resize and post them for you.

As Jay mentioned, fin rot is rare. It also doesn't tend to spread to other fish unless it's a water quality issue or the appearance of fin rot is a symptom of something else.
