Finalising Fish List. Anyone have XP with these together?

Hey Everyone.

Thanks for all the help getting to me where I am now.
I am ALMOST ready to add fish....kind of procrastinating TBH.

Here is what I was thinking for my tank for fish/CUC

its a 36g bow front. 30lx12-16wx18h

I will be definitely get Clowns. And I will be adding those last as I have heard adding them first causes territorial issues I don't feel like dealing with.

First Fish
1x or Mated pair - Kauderns Cardinal or Blue Sapphire Damsel or Blue Damsel

- When I purchase First Fish
- 3x Banded Trochus Snail

Second Fish
1x 6line wrasse

- Second Fish Purchase
- 2x Astraea Snails
- 1x Skunk Cleaner

Third Fish
2x Clown Fish

- If needed./Third Fish
1x Peppermint Shrimps

Maybe Lawnmower blenny or red scooter after tank has been established. 1+year and after I have a sump/fuge built.

Let me know the thoughts. I will be TTM'ing all fish. And will properly be acclimating all inverts. (As I heard you do not need to AT them as they cannot carry fish diseases/parasites)

I will be adding coral eventually once the tank is more established.

Thanks.

i would stay away from the damsels as they can become really aggressive as they get older, if u really want a damsel try the blue green chromis its one the safest or just stick with the cardinals...i also wouldn't bother with the Astraea snails, the trochus r extremely good at handling algae and can sometimes flip themselves back up

Thanks for the info.

I am getting my fish info from here. http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=15+28+2073&pcatid=2073 This is the damsel I wanted. it says peaceful but yes you are correct about maturing aggression.. I didnt want to add the cardinals because it states they are semi-aggressive as well (but i do like the looks). Should I maybe go Firefish?? Those were my other alternatives. for my first fish. As I do want to add my peaceful fish first.

i had cardinals and mine only got aggressive when the had their babies in mouth...my clowns have pretty much killed all but 1 of my cardinals and all chromis except for 1 which is his hang out buddy...i love damsels but they pretty much all get too territorial which is why i just stick to the blue green chromis very peaceful and hardy...the firefish is also hardy but u need a tight lid cuz when not if your clowns scare it..it might jump...its a jumper!

side note my personal experience with peppermint shrimps is that i never really get to enjoy them as they hide too much and when u finally c them its bcuz they r a meal 4 something in your tank...

Yeah i just want peppermint in the hopes it will keep aptasia away.

The 6line will mainly be for Coral Pest Control.

And I really like the look of those Chromis. And they seem like they would be big enough to hold up to a Mature Clown!

I am building a Custom Screen Lid just in case of Jumpers. So I may see what the store has at that time and either for Firefish or these Blue Chromis then!

Thanks for all the advice. Will be buying my first live stock within the next couple of weeks from a Local LFS (J&L Aquatics)

Recommend going with the Cardinals over the Damsels. 6line should go in last and get a small one if possible.

No damsels in a 36 except your clowns. Damsels in multiple need 100 gallons to be peaceful, no matter what Live Aquaria says, and two of them would not be peaceful in a 30. The only damsels that can tolerate close quarters are the small clown species. The sixline may be aggressive in that small a space, too; I'd say maybe a fairy wrasse or a small blenny. Firefish would work, but watch the jumping.

Exactly what Sk8r just said. I would suggest either a fairy or leopard wrasse for pest control. I have a pair of Blue star Leopard Wrasses in my 120 and not only are they stunning to look at, they spend all day every day hunting in the rockwork for something to munch on.

A dragonette of any sort in such a small tank, even with a good size refugium to help, will be difficult to keep due to their dependence on a constant supply of pods to eat. Sure, some will supplement their diet with prepared foods, but that is generally not enough to sustain them.

hth

x2 on the dragonet: impossible to survive long in a 36 and get enough to eat with two clowns pushing for territory besides.

Chrysiptera damsels like the azure are generally far more peaceful than other damsels but they're wild cards. Some are totally chill and others are devils. Really hard to call until they're in your tank and even then the quiet ones can be triggered by certain fish (same size, shape, color, niche, etc.). I would be a little nervous about putting one in a 36G tank.

The six line wrasse can be mean too, also hit or miss. Some target small shrimps or other inverts. They're hunters and go for small critters like pods.

I would strongly discourage you from a leopard wrasse as suggested above. They are about as demanding as dragonets as far as pods, and often show up in poor health (damaged mouths and then starve).

I think clowns would be fine but may get a little territorial. No real worries there.

So then would I be correct with my first intuition on Bangaii Cardinals? I do like those as well just saw the damsel and loved it. But not going to create a hostile environment for anyone. I will do more research on the wrasse

Hi! It's exciting that you're getting close to adding fish!!

I don't normally disagree with fish selection advice given here, but I would avoid fairy wrasses too. Even the smallest of them need more swimming space than a 36g will give them. Flasher wrasses are smaller than fairies, but even that would be pushing it. However, a pink-streaked wrasse could be perfect:

You could also consider a tail-spot blenny (or some other cute small blenny) and maybe a watchman goby and shrimp pair. Cardinals are a good choice too. A whitespotted pygmy filefish might be another to consider -- if you want a range of different types of fish and behaviors in your tank.

Also, if you get your clowns really small (ocellaris I'm presuming?) you'll have a good little while before they start to show aggression towards tank mates, and will likely be smaller than most other fish you'll add in the near future. Not that it's a bad idea to add them last, but if you happen to find some small ones you like just know it will take some time before they pair and change into male and female and become territorial. Have fun picking out your fish!

I'll agree with formsix. The pygmy possum wrasses (white banded, Tanaka's, yellow banded, pink streaked) would be good choices if you want something similar to a dragonet/mandarin. They zip around looking for pods and are generally more active and more visible than dragonets.

Midas blennies are perennial favorites around here. They are goofy and have lots of personality.

The Banggai cardinal is a fine choice, but their style is hit or miss with people. They tend to find a spot they like, usually very visible, and make short twitchy strokes to hold their position in the water. In that sense they're very low movement, but a lot of people really like the way they stake out a spot and stay there for a while. Watch them next time you're at the LFS.

If you want a peaceful tank, then swap out the damsel for a firefish, and swap out the sixline for a possum wrasse. A cardinal would be fine with them, and then I'd add the clowns last. You could also get a goby like a watchman who will hang out on the bottom of the tank since all the others will swim in higher levels, and you could also pair it with a pistol shrimp.

1. Firefish
2. Possum Wrasse
3. Cardinal
4. Goby (with shrimp buddy if you want)
5/6. Clown pair (occelaris or percula are the most peaceful)

And you can get 1 or 2 cleaner/peppermint shrimp also. That would be a nice little peaceful community.

If you are worried about a cardinal being a little too stationary, you could try a pygmy filefish instead. I have a whitespotted tank-raised one from ORA (they sell them on live aquaria) and it is a very cool unique fish.

Thank you all for the advice on my list.
Sorry for the delayed response my daughter was born on June 26th

I have not purchased any fish yet.
I did however purchased
7 trochus, 3 big ones and 4 really small ones
2 bumble bee snails.
1 cleaner shrimp. (molted after 3 days)

I am waiting for my LFS to get more firefish. I have decided this will be my first purchase.

I have 2 5g tanks for TTM and a 10g Main QT (still need to set it up)

Thank you so much I like the looks of the pink streaked wrasse.

Was hoping for True Percula Clowns. and I did see my LFS had a tank filled with babies. (not sure what type.) But that is definitely great advice on the small clowns if I am waiting a long time between stock I may pick up some baby Percs.

Well I certainly must agree with this as it is exactly what is in my 30 gal system with the exception of losing my Randall's goby to a jumping incident two or three months ago (went right through my 1/4 mesh screen top). As mentioned above I got my 2 clowns about a year and a half ago, they were small and have been pretty slow to grow but are begining to show signs of sexual maturity so I'd imagine relocating them will be in the near future.
