Finally (almost), I have my long awaited Mag - treating with Cipro

It's been a long time waiting (months !!!), but I think I am almost there...

Previously, I purchased from LFS's and they never lasted long. This time thanks to everyone here and Minh's excellent Cipro thread I was well prepared. I made it my priority to get hold of Cipro before even considering buying another mag.

It's hard getting hold of a healthy mag here in the UK so when a fellow reefer offered his one, I snapped it up. To cut the story short, by the time I got it home which was 3 days after collection, it's mouth was gaping open its guts hanging out.

I followed Minh's instructions and quickly setup a 10g treatment tank.

These picture were after day 4 and it now looks great already, apart from the damage. There has been no deflating and the mouth has remained tight as in the photo.

My mistakes....
1.
On day 1 of treatment, my powerhead was positioned lying at the bottom of the tank and blowing sideways. My thoughts were they liked high flow. the next morning, a small portion of the base was sticking to the glass and the powerhead had caused it to twist several times, it's mouth was gaping open and did not look very good to me so I pointed it at 10 o'clock. Since re-positioning the powerhead, it looks a lot healthier and it's mouth has closed nicely.

2.
The powerhead was not secured properly and had blown itself so it's intake was near the eggcrate and it sucked in a load of the mags tenticles. I woke up in the morning and was a cloudy tank and quickly did a water change, and properly secured the powerhead. I have since secured it and put more space between the power head and egg crate.

Well so far so good, fingers crossed I will soon be able to move this into my display tank !!!!

I don't think I'm 100% there yet, but just want to say thanks again to everybody here for sharing their experiences and advice.

Looking good other than the damage tentacles. These should recover quickly. Good luck with him.

Hi Minh,
I continued the treatment for the full 7 days and then moved it into my display tank. As you know I have been waiting for this moment for ages and have reserved a space for it a long time ago. It's in the top left corner of the tank surrounded by about 12 BTA's.
There didn't seem to be any problems as the mag made his mark and the BTA's moved away slightly.
The mag has stayed put and today I fed it with some Mysis which it quickly ate. I will try some meatier stuff next time but today I thought I'd just try something small to see how it reacted.
I'm over the moon so far as this has been the one thing I've always wanted as so far (touch wood) it's looking great, so thanks Minh and everyone else who have contributed to the threads on these forums !!!!

It's in the top left corner...

The mouth has more or less stayed like this and he has never deflated

I have a pair of clowns and they've never taken to any of my BTAs and I was hoping they would go straight to the mag, but to date, they've still not shown any interest.
Is there any way of encouraging them to the mag or is it just a waiting game?

beautiful tank. Thats what im shooting for with my next upgrade, nem dominate tank

what size tank is that and what type of light?

Thanks, xray,
The tank is 60L x 24D x 21H
The lighting is a Vertex 260 LED. There are also 2 big green BTAs hidden behind the mag.

Very nice. I like the placement.

The flow looks goof over it, you can see the waves come and go.

Yes, to giving the clowns time, Sit and wait, get a drink and watch.

Thanks worm, theres a MP40 near it and a also a x-aqua return just above it. I'm not sure how big x-aquas are in the US but it some how creates a uneven flow from the return.

Just a little update. The mag continues to do well, no deflation at all the the tenticles that were damaged whilst in the treatment tank are slowly growing back already which is a good sign. I've been feeding it mysis which it eats happily. I will move onto something a bit meatier soon.
Well my daft clowns continued to ignore the mag so last night I lost my patience and decided to try and help them along. I caught them one at a time in a net which was pretty easy as they always come at me when I put my hand in the tank and then inverted and placed the net over the mag so it was in contact with it. Well, I did this about 5 times with the male and he stayed for a couple of seconds and swam off, but on the first attempt, the female just laid there motionless like a dead fish and didn't move for ages. After about 5 minutes it finally dawned on me that she was loving it and didn't want to get out. The male seeing the female in the mag is now also hosting and they are both happy as larry.
Throughout the whole process both clowns were not stressed at all. They just swam up to my hand and didn't put up any resistance when I netted them and I just placed them onto the mag. Now I'm really happy and everything is complete !!!

Did you change 5 gallons per day in your QT? I am going through the same process and worried that after 7 days the QT will be toxic.

Very nice. You got a beauty for your efforts. Congratulation.

rhinonm,
There is a sticky on how to treat sick anemone with Cipro. All you need to know is there but essentially change at least 50% of the water daily.

Thanks OrionN. I read the (awesome) sticky; just concerned about adding additional stress to the nem. By only taking half of the waste out everyday you could be creating toxicity.

Yes, follow the sticky. I changed 5g (50%) per day using water from my display tank. so that when it comes to placing the mag into the DT, the parameters are identical.

If you don't feed and if your anemone is doing well and have no necrotic tissue then there should be no waste. If the anemone is not doing well, I would change 100% of the water every time I do water change. If the anemone is not doing well, there will be pathogen bacterial in the water. Change the water will remove these bacteria
