Fire truck on the fly

Hello. I just wanted to share a picture that I took last month during my trip to S.F. with my wife. I had my XSi on me but the lens cap was on and was in no way ready to be used. But when I heard sirens, I was still able to turn, take the cap off, switch it on, and manage this shot. I was sitting in aperture mode on F8, ISO 200. I think it came out pretty cool though! He was really movin'.

Living in the bay area, I enjoy your pic. I particularly like how the lettering on the truck is so sharp with most else at least slightly blurred.

The palm tree above the truck is a bit hot, imho.

very nice photo... might even be better in b&w.... you could darken the yellow-channel a bit and fix the palm-tree and the yellow-cab at the same time... Watch how that affects the lettering on the fire-truck, you might need to be selective where you apply that channel modifier...

Looking at it again and again, you've really got something here... the use of limited "crisp in-focus" section causes my eye to accelerate towards that area each time which results in a good sense of motion.

To exggerate the left-right motion of the shot, you might also try a more rectulangular crop.. the bottom of the photo(the street) doesn't add anything to the shot, nor does the top where the sky is blown-out...

Just some suggestions on a really nice photo.

Thank you, that is what I find interesting about the photo too.

Thank you very much for the suggestions. I liked your idea enough to try my hand at selective color. What do you think??

"nice", "cool", "whoa", "nice", "interesting", "wow", "pretty! what camera are you using?" (omg you actually said something), "neatg"

I could keep going, nearly all 30 of your posts are 1 worders.

You totally pwned our forums. All of the threads I am trying to keep track of are scrambled all to hell.
If you don't have anything to say, just don't say anything at all. K thanks.

Aw I saw that TS replied to my thread and I was flattered... then I read your post! j/k, but I would love your opinion, keep in mind that it is my first attempt at selective color.

Oops, I opened this thread before you posted and never even saw it! A prime example of forum spamming victimization! :)

I think your origional shot was very well done. The lettering of the truck being virtually the only aspect in crisp focus is a neat effect. You can really tell how the speed of your pan effects the end result, not just in the subject you are isolating, but which section of it under certain circumstances!

I agree with other posts that the sky and palm tree were a little distracting. Since everything aside form "SFD Heavy Rescue" is a blur anyway, selective color was a great route to take IMO. I'm am usually not a fan but in this case it just...works. The job looks clean and crisp without color fading off the truck and into the crowed. You took your time and patience pays. Backtracking to the origional photo for comparison, the selective color makes me *feel* that the truck is moving faster and more urgently than before. I like the new crop as well. Job well done! :)

Wow, thanks TS! I love the selective color on this shot. It was easier than I thought it would be. I used Gimp 2 and it took less than 5 minutes.

Yep, i like it.... the new crop works... Personally, I've never been a fan of selective color shots and in this case I still stand.. hehe... i'd go full back and white. :)

Nicely done... a great shot, good editing... Waiting for your next photo post... :)

Here is a B&W version. I personally like the selective color version. What do you think?

Nice job with the b&w, but apparently I need to have a fire truck be red for a successful image, so I vote for the selective color version.

That's how I felt too!

Interesting. Apparently, in my case, I need iconic images to be the appropriate color, regardless of whether other colors are appropriate or not.

And also, just for the record, I am appreciate quality black and white images, but in this case, the red is a key component of the image, for me.

I agree that selective color can generally be offputting, again for me. But in this case, with such an iconic image and such a hot background distractin (the palm tree), it works.
