First Gig Carpet

I finally found one. This green gig just came in to a LFS. It is being acclimated now and will go into quarantine this evening. The 20 gallon QT is ready to go with a powerhead, heater, air stone, and water from my DT. It is about five inches across and but more bleached than shows in the photo.

I think it looks pretty good given the relocation but would appreciate input. Would you recommend going ahead with the Cipro treatment just in case?

Thanks,
Mark

Mark,
He looks great for a new Gigantea.
I would have Cipro ready and treat if he deflates, as soon as he deflates.
Good luck with him.

Day Two

Day Two

It is now in the quarantine tank. No real change in appearance, except it has expanded a little. The color in this picture is more accurate. There is only a single T8 bulb over the QT so I doubt it will help much with the bleaching. Hopefully it does not need to stay in quarantine more than 5-7 days or else I might need to look at changing the fixture.

Light and Deflation?

Light and Deflation?

It seems that when the light is on, the anemone contracts somewhat. Not full deflation, but definitely contracts and the tentacles get shorter. When I turn the light off for a while, it seems to expand and the tentacles lengthen. Is this normal for a Gig that has been in QT for less than 24 hours??

This is opposite to what I observe with my Gigantea.
I have had Gig and Mag that are sick and contract and deflate when they get expose to light.
Watch him closely and start treatmetn quickly if you see any problem.

It looks a bit bleached to me. The response to lighting may just be it acclimating to your lights. Gigs are not usually shipped in the best of conditions. Is it gaping? How severe is the difference between when the lights are on or off?

Yeah, definitely bleached. The mouth is not completely tight, but not gaping at all. When the lights go off, it expands significantly (maybe 25-30% larger) and the tentacles elongate. Something is going on with it, but I hope the Cipro helps.

Thanks,
Mark

Day 3 - Lights vs No Lights

Day 3 - Lights vs No Lights

It still contracts when the lights are on. You can see the difference, particularly in the length of the tentacles. Moved a 4 bulb T5 over it, but only two lights are on. It does not seem to be getting worse, but not really better yet. Really hard to see the mouth because it is right in the center fold.

I think the anemone looks great. I think he was in low light for a while and is getting use to high light again. The picture with light show him to be healthy, compack. The picture without light show him to be a normal Gigantea at night.

I think he will be fine and will do well.

Five days of treatment. The Gig seems to be about the same, maybe a little more inflated, but have never seen any discharge or other signs of stress. It looks about the same and has never really looked sick.

The only negative is that it is still light sensitive. With the lights out, it puffs up larger with elongated tentacles. With the lights on, it contracts, but does not really deflate. It is getting a little darker, but it was pretty well bleached at first.

Thoughts? Should I move it to the DT or leave it in quarantine until it stops contracting when the lights come on? Continue with Cipro?

Thanks!!
Mark

It sounds like it's having a hard time dealing with light since it's bleached. What kind of lights does your DT have? Are they dimmable? If so, since the anemone does not show signs of infection (discharge, gaping, deflated) I think it can go into the DT, provided you have a place where you can shade it or dim the lights if needed. However, if you can I would continue Cipro for two more days (for a full 7 day course) to ensure that the nem is cured, then move it to the DT.

I would also keep the QT tank on hand in case you need to remove the gig from the DT. It doesn't need to be set up, you just need to be able to quickly set it up if you have an emergency.

Since your plan was not to keep the QT up and running for longer than a few days, it makes sense to try to move it. Bleached nems take a while to fully recover -- not days -- more like weeks or even months.

I have AI LED's on the DT so they are dimmable. On the QT, all I have is a 24 inch, 4 bulb, T5 set up and it seems that even 2 bulbs makes it contract. It is no problem running the QT so I will leave him and continue the Cipro for another couple of days. He has definitely colored up some, but still quite bleached. Hopefully it will soon acclimate to the light soon.

Thanks!!!

A couple of "lights on" shots.

It looks like a healthy but partially bleached Gigantea to me. I would put him in DT if he have not deflated in 4 days or so.

Made it!!

Made it!!

The Gig is all settled in and the perculas found it in about 15 seconds. Still pretty bleached, but reacts quickly when I feed it mysis. Very glad it seems to be doing well.

Thanks,
Mark
