Fish are smarter than we think stories

After my experience last night with my bonded pair of flame hawk fish I figured I would start this thread.

Just last night 1 somehow found its way into the overflow (which is covered). After I opened a bigger hole in the grate covering the overflow the other came by to entice and show the other where to come back out. The 1 outside would "climb" around the grate to show where to exit, after which the other finally exited the overflow leaping over its mate on the way out as if to say "Weeeeee. Look at me!" After the fish got out they proceeded to frolic about throughout the tank like a pair of puppies. This scene lasted for a good 20 minutes and I was sitting there watching like being glued to a game on TV. I was first going to try to use the net to get her out, but I figured I'd watch first to see what happens. Glad I did. They really are a trip to watch and seeing this made me realize that fish are smarter than we (or at least I) think.

Also I would highly recommend a bonded pair to anyone thinking of possible fish additions.

That does it.

A pair of these has been on my watch list for a while now. Next time one turns up on DD, I'm pulling the trigger.

I have some pretty cool fish in my tank (IMO) and as nice looking as some of the others these are without question my favorite fish to watch with the interaction between them. I have and have had other pairs sold to me as "bonded pairs" but none with the interaction between them as these have.

Please add some other fish stories proving that "fish are smarter than we think." Makes for some entertaining reading

Wow that's an awesome story. I love bonded pairs of fish and watching their interaction. I am considering a pair when I upgrade!

Ok if you would like smart fish how about leopard wrasses that come when you signal them and swim in your hands......these are in my 540........

very cool!
I watched a baby cortez angel "teach" a baby queen angel how to clean a fish...then later saw the queen "teach" an emp how to do it...
fish are endlessly fascinating....
I also saw an octopus sneak out of his tank, walk across a room to get a meal, and walk back to his tank... but that is for a different time, lol....

Thats a great story! its funny how sometimes we think that these fish aren't as smart as they really are but maybe, just maybe they are smart enough to think the same thing about us. just look at him! he looks so stupid scrubbing the glass! lol

Yes Ted - and then the Octopus got out, took a dive into your pool a/k/a new tank. And then you got another drink.

haha...in college we had 5 tanks in our living room...there was a common octo in one...directly across from the octo was a freshwater African tank...at some point the Africans began to disappear...we suspected a roommate or friend was pulling a prank on us so we hid a camcorder to see what was happening...what we recorded was the octo slipping thru a tiny hole in the cover of his tank, sliding down the tank, pulling himself up the African stand, going in to the fresh water African tank, catch his lunch, and then make his way back across the floor and then climb back into his tank...
def. one of the coolest things I have ever seen, the thought process behind his actions is remarkable...

Do you still have the video? because I would love to see it. I recently watched a documentary about octopussies?..woops..I mean octopi which basically proved that they are capable of complex reasoning and problem solving.

As for personal experiences with fish, I had a dwarf fuzzy lionfish that used to beg for food and even 'sit' on the palm of my hand. Pretty common behaviour among lionfish if i'm not mistaken.

+1 - need to see that video

There have been many accounts and variations of the story of an Octopus escaping it's tank to raid another and then return. Saw a re-enactment on a tv doc about octo intelligence where one was stealing crabs in a Lab. The scientists also busted it by setting up a camera but unfortuneately never got to see that footage. Best I've seen was a crab put in a bottle with a lid and it didn't take long for the occy to work out how to open it. There's also vid out there of a Mantis Shrimp "playing" with a Rubicks Cube lol.
My old Clown Trigger used to pick up rocks and drop them on fish below but this was surely just accidental, looked funny though. Watching Wrasse turn over stones is cool to.

I have a puffer that watches TV. When certain shows come on he makes his way to the right side of the tank closest to the television and swivels his eyes watching. He swims away when commercials come on. Loves Sponge Bob! So do I =-)
