Fish killing Humane/Inhumane?

What is the easiest fastest way to kill, a diseased; ill fish that has no more fighting chance left. But still alive.

I've heard, freezing it is inhumane, and slowly kills the fish.
chopping the head off; fast n easy but doesn't kill the fish instantly? (inhumane?)
flushing it(wouldn't do anyways) but also inhumane
:headwally:
So whats everyone's way to dispose of there fish easiest n fast for the fish?

BEst and most humane way, would be to hit it in the brain with a hammer.

but I guess you have to be good at it to get it and first shot. look at the ppl who work in asian fish markets.

next would be freezing in the fridge, fish is cold blooded, so shouldnt feel much.

I had to put a fish down once. I froze him. I guess they aren't supposed to feel anything. That the colder they get the more their system slows down and they just feel like they are going to sleep? Idk if its true but I sure hope it is. I couldn't bring myself to bop him in the head :(

As cruel as is may sound I've always slammed them on the floor, few nerve twitches is all I've ever seen... fortunately it doesn't happen much to me,

GARY, your way to funny

We had a member of our local forum go "spear fishing" with a BBQ fork. Ridiculous. I assure you that way is inhumane.

The most humane way would be to use anesthetize them via clove oil or something similar. Once they are out, add some more oil, or freeze them.

I just started helping a guy out with his tank and hearing his stories about removing inhabitants. He had a clown that kept nipping at him when his hand was in the tank so he threw it down the garbage disposal. I kind of like when fish do that but to each his own. He had an emerald crab that was making him mad somehow (How?) so he chopped it up on a cutting board and fed it back to his fish. He's an interesting one. I wanted to ask him what was wrong with him.

That is absolutely horrible! I hope he doesn't have a cat or dog that makes him mad...ugh people these days..

does he have children? :hmm1:

And here I thought the Saltwater hobby was peaceful... maybe just my perception.. heh

I wouln't help him with his tank or associate with with him at all. Destroying and abusing creatures is an anathema to me. I'm hoping for karma.

Yeah, I agree with you all. He's a little nutty.

He's planning on moving and taking the tank down soon. He said I could have his inhabitants when he does. I'm holding on so I don't see things like his clam go into the garbage. Plus I want it.

Because he treats animals like a commodity.

guess it would depend on the fish size, removing the head w/ a knife or freezing are reasonable IMO. the few fish I keep for the table go quickly. I don't muck about, and say a quick prayer

My method has always been the same I get a 5 gal bucket and fill it half way with ice cold water. Drop them in and in seconds they are dead or at least their gills stop moving that quickly.I leave them in for a couple of minutes to be sure and then its into the garden for fertilizer.

I can imagine that "Shocking" anything in ice water would first, "shock" it, then kill it.

I'm thinking that you want to adjust its environment and chemistry slowly.

Check out this video about how you can kill a frog without it ever knowing that it's in any danger. (I'm not saying that I'm in favor of killing frogs, but in the name of science, this is a very interesting video).

That frog didn't actually die. They put a fake plastic one in after before the boiling part of the video.

You are very correct

If you watch the video to the very end, they show the "stunt frog". The science behind it doesn't change though.

Thanks for all the replys guys!
I ended up freezing the poor guy. His gills were bearly moving and I needed to do somthing. I couldn't bring myself to "chop" or "wack" any of my fish. :(
