For those dosing prodibio bioptim and biodigest

I've been using the Prodibio products for about two years now. I still use Rowaphos and chaeto. It seems to work for me. Check out my gallery, I think my tank looks pretty good.

For the record

i have dosed 1 amp of bioptim and 1 amp of bio digest in a 60 gallon cube every 2 weeks for the last 6 months with no ill effects (in fact really good effects).

In addition i have also added four drops of zeovit aahc every day and 4 ml of vodka every day.

I have a full box of reefbooster,I used it twice, at the recomended dose, both times I had corals rtn and m skimmer took 24 hour to recover, then went crazy for 12 hours,I wont use that again.
I massively overskim, use a filter sock and am meticulous about debris siphoning and water changes.

my tank as is

I am on my second dose of the bio-digest. I also dose Zeostart and Zeofood every other day. I am running GFO, but if I ever get to that magical day where my phosphates are undetectable on my test kit then I will probably stop running the GFO. All my parameters are good except for phosphates. They typically are around .25 to .5. I have a 180 gallon tank with probably around 20 gallons in the sump. Interesting thread.

I bought some Prodibio but was wondering if anyone con explain how this works between doses. What I mean by that is when you dose your biodigest and bioptim then you are good for 2 weeks, well don't you need a carbon source dosed daily to keep the bacteria alive?

Thanks
Kevin

I on the other hand, am 11 weeks in. I removed my Phosban reactor after week2...all is good. PO4 measured at 0.02 last Sat. I don't run a fuge or chaeto so can't comment on that. Sorry. I get the feeling there are several ways to run this stuff and still have success with it. :)

You def don't want your UV on though. UV kills bacteria among other things.

You know, I'm just gonna leave the Chaeto anyway. That's the only thing that I "haven't" taken out or off line. I think I'll watch for it to die off as my indicator that the Prodibio is doing it's job. I don't see how it being in there in the mean while could really have any adverse affect on the Prodibio working correctly or not.

I think it will be interesting to watch and see what happens or not.

By the way, if I'm wrong about the Chaeto, someone PLEASE chime in and let me know your thoughts. I'm still open to suggestion....

I didn't take chaeto out by choice. I would put it in and it would just not grow and then sloooooowly die off. I gave up after 4 bunches. I tried various light cycles also from 24 hr to same as DT to reverse of DT.

Correct, you are good for 2 weeks. I'm sure there are some who do dose some type of C source (vodka, sugar, vinegar) in btwn though. I don't find it necessary.

Dave, I don't really think leaving your chaeto in will cause a problem. I wouldn't even worry about it. Keep in mind Prodi is a slooooow process so don't be surprised if it lasts 4-6 months.

Hi Cato,

maybe I missed it but just how long have you been running Prodibio for now? I'm curious now that you emphasize the s-l-o-w part of the process...

How long was it before "you" began to notice a difference in your system? I'm asking because since taking Phosguard out of my system I'm having to clean my glass like every 2 days now... very agrivating! I do have a heavy bio load but my PO4 and PO3 are still within acceptable ranges since losing the Phosguard.

I'm just curious how long it will take to start doing it's job in "my" system??? Other than the 6 weeks or so, are there any other indicators as to when to start the Reefbooster and the Iodine and Strontium? How long did you wait to begin the other additives?

Hi Dave. I've only been running Prodi for 3 months. Greg Carroll has been helping me out along the way. During the initial 6wk loading phase, I notice coral lightening slowly around week 5. Then at wk 7 I started reef booster and improvements in PE and colors were subtle but def noticeable the few days following. Seems like after every reefbooster dose things look a tad better. I look fwd to every Sat. :D Growth is unbelievable. New nubs everywhere. If you have a DSB it can take months to see changes from what I've read. My sand is only about an inch for aesthetics. Some of the growth on glass could be the "biofilm" many talk about as opposed to algae. I was dosing Zeo supps (aminos, vitalizer, xtra, iodine, K) for several months prior to starting Prodi. My dosing of these were much less than the rec dosages on the bottles though. This was guidance from the guys on the Zeo forums.

As of today, I am stopping all supps except for Prodi and aminos to see if things change at all over the next month or 2. In regards to Prodi, I only use digest, optim and booster. I never did iodo or stronti. I tested for both of these (Salifert) and my levels are fine. HTH

That's good info Cato. Thanks for posting this. I think a lot of us are in the initial "loading" phas and there is not a lot of info out there on what to expect. That is my biggest frustration with the program. There are not many before and after photos like you see with Zeo. This info helps though. It's one of the few posts on RC that tell you what to expect.

Thanks!

Thanks so much for your post Cato, I appreciate the input. Not sure about the "biofilm" though... this just looks like the dusty green build up I used to see before running Phosguard, although that was some time ago.

I will do some looking into the whole biofilm thing and just continue to be patient. It is nice however to have a little bit better of an idea what to expect. I am concerned about my sandbed now... I have always run a 3 inch or so sand bed and only recently have come to like the "shallow" version of today's more modern tanks. I'm torn now as to whether or not to pull some of it out or not or to just stay the course and give it the time it needs to seed properly, the Prodibio that is...

At any rate... thanks!

You're welcome Dave. From what I hear, if you decide to remove some sandbed, do it gradually over time to limit nutrient release. :)

Ok, but my sandbed is actually only about 3.5 months old maybe 4? When my tank crashed in late September or so I completely removed my old sandbed and replaced it with new. Wouldn't the fact that this is a relatively young sandbed so to speak have some bearing on how much and how soon to remove? I suppose it would be best to er' on the side of caution though, eh?

What would your thoughts or anybody else's be on this?
