Forrest's Reef Tank Build

Thanks dude, however sadly I think I'm gonna have to take that DIY rock out. Even though I thought it was nice and cured its skyrocketed my ph to 8.6+. However that's why I put it In now, there's nothing to kill or damage right now!

Do me a favor and check Alkalinity before you remove that rock. Alk is much more important the pH.

Alk is around 10. I know that's more important however ph of more then 8.6 can be stressful and very damaging. Not worth it even if it is really cool. Lol

Pretty bummed on it. I'm debating leaving it in and doing my first initial water change and seeing if it drops down and then if it doesn't lower ill remove it. Thoughts?

Nitrites are almost at 0... At .5 currently. Alk is 9-10.

Crap!!! Just did about a 17 gallon water change and the ph is still way to high!! What can I do to lower it that's going to be safe?

Edit!!! Woot! It's gone down, given I just spent 5 minutes exhaling through a hose into the water. It's into acceptable range!!'

6 hermits up top, 3 in the sump.

Added a few little feeder spoon size pinches of food to give them some stuff to munch on as well as to keep bacteria at good levels!

Subscribed!!

Im still in the research and development phase of my first SW build. Reading along is GREAT info on how to and what to expect. Thanks for the updates and keep them coming!!

Questions about your sump- what do you have in it? just LR? and what is your plan down the road?

Thanks man! Sump is the usual sand with some LR rubble. Will have cheato down there soon. Currently next objective is 1 or 2 more power heads and my reef breeder 48 photons. Gotta wait a couple weeks for that. Secondly outside of the DT I'm getting my 20 gal quarantine this week. Just a simple all in one tank. Get that cycled then get our first two fish additions. 2 fire fish. Lots and lots of time spent researching.

I run a bare sump with Chaeto and rock. No sand. Gotta find what works for you best. Weigh the benefits and how much more time you will spend on maintenance.

I do not have cleaner shrimp. I just have about 6 Peppermint Shrimp. I have seen tanks with more than 1. I think it really depends on what the rest of your tank will be.

I'm debating adding one. They have a good personality it seems but people have stories of them eating polyps. I suppose I should focus on my QT first. Prolly gonna buy some more hermits tonight and maybe a snail or 4 lol

Nice! Yeah I was mostly playin. Ill probably get 2 nassarius. I can't wait to get a fighting conch but he needs a good amount of food. Love those little guys.

Really all they did was run into each other and chase each other around. Sometimes one would knock the other over. That was about the extent of it.
