Forrest's Reef Tank Build

Yeah, you can use either. I used a shrimp for my first tank, a 14g biocube. I used pure ammonia to cycle my current tank. No problems since.

Nice. I'm just thinking that with as much live rock as I put in the ammonia was take n care of quickly. It definitely smells so I know there's decay.

Two updates, moved the shrimp and it completely fell apart I suppose when I get my hermits they will thoroughly enjoy themselves. Secondly!!! We have Ammonia! 1-2ppm right now. Super excited. And lastly I was a retard and didn't know I had to let the test kits sit for 5 minutes to completely test. My lack of knowing lol. Either way 4th night and on the way!

I am guessing you have the API kit right? Just remember other test will have different waiting periods and drops to put in the 5ml test tube. Also its a good idea to rise your glass where after each test. I just put in clean RO/DI water to the 5ml mark, shake it, and pour it out. I do this three times then dry with a clean paper towel.

Lol yep API, using my brothers. I always thoroughly clean them after each use.

Do yourself a favor and invest in a more reputable test kit. I used API and my tests were always off. I use Red Sea Marine Care and Red Sea Reef Foundation Pro for testing. Easy to use, easy to read, and pretty accurate.

Oh I'm aware. I'm simply using his for the cycle. All I need to know are the three and an API kit does just fine for that.

I used API when I cycled and my cycle seemed to never end until I got my Red Sea test kits. Then I saw my ammonia was at 0 and my nitrates were at 10. Damn API made me wait longer!

Recalibrated my refractometer and it was actually a little off, put it back to right and my tank was pushing 1.027, so did a freshwater change and brought it down to 1.025, hopefully that didn't have a huge affect on bacteria growth being to saline. But should be better now! Will probably drop it to 1.024 with the first big water change as well. Much safer there.

Its far easier to lower SG than to raise SG. 1.024 isn't bad. I like to stick to sk8r "water quality matters" signature that says 1.024-1.026 is where you SG should be. I put mine in the middle so it can bend a little and not hurt anything.

That is a valid point sir. I wasn't not thinking about the hardness of lowering or raising. Ill leave it were it is!
