Free to good home... Asterina starfish breeding colony :)

If you are considering getting into the lucrative business of breeding asterina stars, then this colony is for you. Aprox. 3 dozen of these beautiful creatures that are guaranteed to breed quickly and fill up your tank. Free to a good home with someone that will truly appreciate them. The gift that keeps on giving... Lol

you too can have loads of fun, just like i did yesterday... just add them to your tank, wait a week or 2, then start plucking them out. hours of enjoyment all for free :)

Why pluck them...? They are good for the tank.

they reproduce like crazy! besides, i heard that they will eventually cause harm to your coral. i haven't researched them much. it just concerned me when i went from seeing a couple to 3 dozen in a month :-o

LOL..... Buy a pair of harlequin shrimp. You'll never be able to pick them out fast enough.

i believe it.... ugh... i just looked, and i can count a couple dozen again :(

will harlequin shrimp eat them? i think they are beautiful. i would love to have a pair, if they would help.

just googled it, and saw several places stating that harlequins will indeed go to town on asterina stars! nothing personal elegance coral, i just like to double check before adding anything new to the tank, especially something specialized like harlequins. that's a bonus then! i really like harlequins! lol :)

so, if anyone sees a bonded pair of harlequins for sale locally, please let me know...

Don't get a pair, even one will die, they will eat all the stars and since that is all they eat they will die, if u want buy one have it eat all the asterinas than give it to someone else, if you want tidal gardens has a YouTube video about them if you want mor window on what it would take to keep them alive, I think it ended up being like 400 a year in food just to keep it alive

gotcha... i have read that they flip them over and eat the tubed feet. didn't think about them stopping there...

Jon,
FWIW, I had a pair myself, and to validate, they eat the whole thing and will wipe out your problem in less than a month. I agree to pay them forward, in an active reef community, you simply pass them from one friend to another, the stars will reproduce and the population will grow in no time at all without the presence of a harliquin, then simply borrow back and allow it to knock them down again and again. Some purchase chocolate chip stars from lfs to feed them, they will knock down a 5" star in a week or so. They will perish without starfish available.

thanks for the info perry. i like the idea of paying them forward myself. i have a feeling that i could find a couple locals to rotate out with.
