FS: (I can't call 'em babies anymore) Clown Pair

Okay, these two "babies" are ready and raring to go. They established their dominance over the other babies and are busy twitching at each other, so these two cuties are a pair now. I have them isolated from the other clowns so they stop nipping fins.

They are a good 1 1/4" - 1 1/2" long (including fins), their black is coming in nicely, and they are ready for just about any kind of tank and eat anything I throw at them. They need a good home with a caring 2-legged waiter and slave.

$20 for the pair. They were hatched Jan 15th, 2006 and are hand tame. Both are mis-bars.

Is 11 fish, (9 + these 2), too many for a 120 gallon?

What if 2 of the existing 9 are percs? Is 4 clowns too many for a 120?
Would they all fight over the anemone? My 2 existing already fight over the anemone.

What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks
Josh

Hey NicoleC,
I'll ask my girl when she gets home, but if you can hold them for a month I'd take them.

Rich

You're maxxed out on clowns. They'd almost certainly fight and eventually kill each other. Too bad, I'd like you to have this pair. They are spunky and would like a big reef tank.

I can already tell which is going to be the female -- the *smaller* fish is the bolder one, and she is already kind of protecting the bigger fish. The big one twitches at her. I bet she grows to be bigger than him in no time. That's the one who is being a camera hog in all the photos!

That depends. Did you learn your lesson about quarantine? :D

I have other babies, folks. These two are just a good lookin' pair. I have 4 others -- one of which is still a bit small and isn't ready for a big rough tank, I think, but he would be fine in a nano. He's growing fast now that he's separated from these big pigs.

Yes learned it, and learned it well! The blue tang is doing well in the 15gal QT tank I set up. I'm probably gonna wait a total of 5 weeks for the cycle. Do you think I should do hypo on every new fish?

Rich

Thanks Nicole. This is good information. I'd hate to introduce a fish into an environment that would be hostile.

Good luck, I hope you find a good home for them.

Thanks
Josh

Xavier - 2 clowns per tank, max. (Except really big tanks, and sometimes fairly big tanks with lots of anemones and rockwork.) Mixing species is no prolem, though, except with maroons.

Rich - I'd be inclined to say yes. I don't, but I am really diligent (neurotic? obsessive?) about looking for signs of illness and rarely miss something. If in doubt, I'd say yes. Just give the fish a few days or so to settle in and start eating first.

Let me know what the boss says.

Nicole,

How long does it take for a mated pair to start laying eggs? I have two Ocellaris in my tank that were juveniles, but they are definitely maturing. One's been in the tank for about 8 months, the other 3.

It depends on the conditions. In optimal conditions with lots of food, warm temps and peace and quiet, about a year. Some fish are more tolerant than others. Mine are bulletproof -- they even laid eggs in hypo and will stop spawning if I walk up to the tank, but only long enough to see if I have food.

Rich, I'm in Orange.

I bou to you!

Can percs still mate even if they hate each other?

I know its possible in humans.

My large perc won't let my small perc in the anemone. And this anemone is huge 12"+. The small perc hovers on a ledge above the anemone, but if the small perc comes down, the big perc nips at him.

So are they just angry, or can even potential mates always be angry at each other?

They are both less than a year old, how long do I have to wait before I'll know their sexes?

Thanks
Josh

Josh, it sounds like they are just going through the bickering phase. As long as the small one isn't fighting back you have no worries. It's a step on the way to being a true pair. The big one is the female.

A single clown will get along with a clarkii, but 2 clowns is your maximum.

Thanks, Jeff!
