Just wanted to let folks know about some interesting stuff I saw today at Rick's in Vestal.... 125g RR (used) with some plumbing and black pine stand - $375 cash. He also had a vey cool octo. I'd never buy it but octos are amazing ceatures. Also had a really neat unidentified coral that apparently he has had for years and is just now developing into something. It is flame red and looks to be a softie.

The unknown coral is in one of the bigger tanks, on the bottom row (hard to explain, but you'll see it - the coral is right in front in the middle of the tank). I was going ot take a pic of the coral and post on here, but I didn't have my phone with me.

Octo as in cephlopod - very cool watching his color change. I didn't ask about species, but it was fairly large (compared to other octos I've seen in the trade) and only $99, so I'm assuming it's one of the very common species. The octo is in the little tank setup right in the doorway as you enter the "fish room".

I was there the other day when the guy was unloading that tank from his truck. Sweet setup and good price tag on it. If I had the extra $$ I would be grabbing it up in a heartbeat.

How is his coral selection now? I used to go there at least once a week, but havent been there in around a year. He used to never have more than a few coral at a time.

Better now. He actually has 2 of his smaller tanks set up as frag tanks for corals. Still pretty basic corals (mostly softies, shrooms, zoos and the like, though he did have a bubble coral the other day), but at least it's something.

Ditto on Jackson's post and to just to add to it he's got several anemones as well too. He's expanded the saltwater selection 1 isle into his freshwater area.

I bet that coral just stagnated there for years because it didn't have enough light, maybe enough to sustain it, but not enough to get it to grow or "color up". He used to keep those tanks under very poor lighting (and they were really dirty), he never really believed that good light was needed.

Anyway...my guess is he put some light on is and *Poof* hey, whaddya know...there is some life there.

Yea, I thought the same thing. Looks like a T5 fixture over a few of the tanks, and I heard him advocating T5s over reef tanks to a customer the other day. Actually said lighting was the most important factor...

Bottom line for me is:

How are the prices?

If I am over in the Binghamton area (coming from Elmira), is it worth stopping in for a look?

I assume it is not worth a trip just to stop by?

A common misconception...

We all know water quality is more important than lighting but water quality doesn't sell T5 fixtures does it? I guess it is forgivable though since you really do need both. I will have to stop by some time and check out what he has. Is he carrying t5 fixtures now?

Nate - yes, that is a common belief, but its significant coming from him who used to say that everything can flourish under NO lights. And I would tend to put water flow right up there with lighting, depending on the setup.

His prices are still pretty high, but he's doing some crazy deal where you get 1% off for every $10 spent. So 10% off $100, 50% off $500, etc.

He always has some crazy priceing thing. I have been going to him for almost 10 years and he actually talked me into a UGF and 4x40 lighting for my first 75 gal reef. Talking to him years later about lighting he said he knows how importing lighting is, but does not carry corals that need strong lighting so "Anyone can have a salt water reef tank". I actually talked him into putting a 4x65PC light setup on the one 75 years ago after I bought the light setup from him and told him how much better everything was doing.
