garf bonsai

I agree with the people saying lower light. Here is a picture of my GARF Bonsai which I have on the bottom of my tank.

here's my GARF, it was light but then I dimmed the LEDs down a little, it got darker, I then moved it down further in the tank, as I did not want to dim any further and it's since gotten darker purple than in the pic.. it's currently receiving about 250PAR and getting a nice dark purple tint.

I have the Garf Bonsai and the Silver Bullet Bonsai. I crush both of them with light and flow. In my experience, with too much light the Garf gets a maroon/purple. With a little less light it will go solid purple.

The picture below was a bit of an experiment. I placed a frag of both bonsai's next to each other to see if they would grow together or not. They grew right up against one another without stinging each other, but the tissue did not "mesh" together. In my opinion I believe they are the same species, but they prefer to remain autonomous instead of joining together since they are different variations.

Silver Bullet in front, on the right. Garf is behind, on the left.

thewire, his bonsai is in the upper middle of his 24" deep tank lit by 175w MHs (in very focused reflectors) and T5s.

I have my garf about 12 inches down under 400 watt XM 15k's. Its colors are very pastel. Growth is good though. I've got the feeling I've got to lower it to bring out the color.

I have burnt too different Bonsais trying to pull some color out of them. I now have them at them mid-bottom of my 40 breeder. They are getting a nice purple shade. Oh and I suppose the 400w Radium might be a little too much in the first place.

When it's all relative talking about "lighting requirements" for a Bonsai; Compared to general coral yes high light. Compared to Acropora, low light (less than a Milli, more than a Echinata). My two cent.

reefrf: Looks like you found the sweet spot. Congrats and thanks for the pic.

Aquavista...Aka Tim, real nice I have one similar but blue with yellow polyps;) Not sure if it's the same and hasn't yet colored up, but it has been in my system for almost 2 yrs.

One of my favorite SPS, been looking for a frag for a while, but I've missed the boat once or twice. Can't wait to get a little piece of the action one of these days.

Well, mine browned out on me so about a month ago I tried moving it lower.. so far.. no dice :( Does seem to be growing but pretty slow, still not branching yet either.. Any thoughts?

I've got other maricultured pieces that I bought brown that are colouring up, and aquaculture pieces that have been looking great.. just no luck on one of my favorite coral. Right next to it I have a 500$ efflo which is finally getting a nice deep blue/purple.

I have a main colony and two smaller colonies that started as frags to the main (garf bonzai). The bigger colony has the highest placement in the tank and has the least vivid color. Also note that I have an Atlantis bonzai that is very vivid purple that is lower in the picture. It grew more slowly, spread across the rock then grew more vertically. The garf grew vertically much more directly in my three colonies.

Sweet pics everybody, you have sold me on this coral...

Thank you for this thread as my LFS has a 1" frag that I have been going back and forth about getting for the past week and seeing these great pics, I am going to get it this afternoon. Also, thank you for the info on placement. I had picked a location on the top of my reef for it, but with all the info here, I have now found a better spot toward the bottom. Thanks...

I think you made a good choice on placement with 250-watt halides, especially if you have reflectors.

thanks, this spot will showcase it really well also, and give it a good amount of room to grow...

Anybody wanna PM me what they think is a fair price for a 1" frag before I take the leap, thanks, Dave
