Gate Valves vs Ball Valves

Personally I'd use slipxslip and then a union. I also like the idea of threaded bulk heads but sometimes threads can be a pain. I'd suggest getting pipe thread sealent for any threaded attachments. And as people have said gate valves are great for fine tuning drains. But not so great for when you need to make a quick shut off.

And I'd like to second your choice for going with BRS. They are an amazing company who care more about the marine aquarium community then just making a dollar.

Yeah so it's smart to put both a gate and ball on the main drain

Here is a pic of the bulkhead to pipes and a pic of gate valve with a ball valve on same line. The ball valve is for quick shut off and gate for fine tuning and trust me fine tuning is necessary. Can't stress enough using unions. I put unions on each side of the gate valve to be able to remove and clean or reuse because gates aren't cheap.

Thanks. Do you have any unions or ball valves near the return pump?
