Gate Valves vs Ball Valves

I have seen on some plumbing where people both the gate valves and the ball valves. Is there any particular reason why the do that? Do they not each serve the same purpose?
If not what would be the difference a gate valve and a ball valve?

gate valves are easier to tune. Now, I personally have been using ball valves for years so I just continue to use them... but the gates are a lot easier to work with long term.

I use both in on lines in my system. I use the ball valves as turn on/off and the gate valves to fine tune the amount of flow. Ball valves are much too difficult to fine tune.

Here i have both on my lines. I use the ball valve for a quick shut off and I use a gate for fine tuning.

I used ball valves for years because they were cheaper and readily available at the local hardware. But if unused for long periods of time they can become almost impossiblr to adjust. My last build I got gate valves from Graingers because I knew I needed to be able to fine tune this manifold. They cost a bit more and the took a couple of days to get, but are they so much easier to use!

Gates are a lot easier to use for fine tuning. The ball you have to get it just right. Some ball valves also seems to be harder to turn too. Like the cheap ones you get at Lowes or home depot.

I always used ball valves... but like others have said fine tuning with them is a nightmare and like scuzy said the ones from home depot and lowes are really hard to turn

Marinedepot is cheaper for gate valves and supplyhouse is cheaper for quality true union ball valves

I was going to buy the Cepex ball valve from BRS and the gate valves too from there. I know Cepex website is cheaper then BRS but you don't get both slip and threaded ends with one valve.

Which is better to use slip or threaded for both gate valves and ball valves?
Same question for unions which would be better slip or threaded?

Threaded allow you to remove. Inside ports looks bigger. Slip has bigger hole but once it's on you are stuck.
