No, you do need a filter screen above the media. You do need one below to prevent the media from falling to the bottom. Hth.

I asked about needlewheel skimmers the other day, and he sent me this pic. Looks promising.

I have my GEO 612 on order. It's supposed to arrive tomorrow. The rest of the accessories should arrive next Tuesday. I ordered a pH controller with it, but I'm not sure how that will fit in exactly. I have gotten the impression from this thread that there is a specific piece that is needed. Does anyone have any pictures of how the probe fits in? Thanks.

This thread details what I have exactly.

Hey guys I just got my Geo 612 and it looks like a great piece of equipment. I don't want to rob this thread but I figured I'd ask those of you that do have the Geo's a question. I'm setting mine up and am a bit confused. Do you need a filter/screen above the media???? Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks Ray:rolleye1:

IMO I say yes, this will prevent the media getting sucked up and clogging the reactor. I am talking from experience on this one. I run it this way.

Hard to say grego as to what constitutes better. My GEO products are easy to adjust, stable, problem free, and built like a tank. I have never used the Korallin, so I can't compare.

A question for you Geo kalk reactor guys.... I am about to get one used from a fellow reefer.... Just wondering what the fitting / valve comming off the pump is for? I know the top has the inlet / outlet but what about that one? a drain? Thanks

1/2 a cup? That's pretty weak.... Will be filling it every week.... oh well, better than mixing every day !!!!!!

I put about 1 Lb of kalk in mine, but mine is a custom 8"x24" tall. Works awesome. Sorry it has taken me so much to post pictures.

Here is my kalk reactor.

Fluidized Media reactors. One for phosban and one for carbon.

Ca reactor. Currently is filled with the large Schuran media. It is 8"x36" tall.

You can put more probably and keep the mixing duration low. I like the 1/2 cup amount myself. It forces me to clean it, and I don't get a ton of that grey residue.

BTW, 1/2 a cup is quite a bit. Consider that you use one teaspoon for one gallon of water in a typical drip solution, and you don't use it all up.

How do you like the Schuran media?

I have mixed feelings about it. Ont he one hand I like it because it does not turn into sand at all, which cuts the having to take apart the reactor every 5-6 months. On the other hand, it requires a much lower pH to dissolve well (6.3-6.5), using your CO2 twice as fast.

I ahve used just about every other media before except for the Korallith (large chunks) and they all pretty much turn into sand if the pH get below 6.65. That is a huge pain as it clogs the prefilter pads inside the reactor requiring that you take it apart. This media does not turn into sand no matter how low the pH. It claims also, like the others, that it does not produce PO4. I still run the effluent through a phosban filter anyway. CO2 is cheap, so I may be trading a little cost for more convinience.

What kind of pump is on your KR for mixing?

It is a maxijet 1200.
