Whats up with that open power box behind everything? Thats kinda scary. Nice idea with the water bottle, I had the same problem with a 55.

Not my system but I can tell you that is coax for cable TV. Dude has his stuff wired for video!

Coax cable has electricity. Doesn't it?

Very low voltage on RG59 coax. You can feel it if you place the wire on your tongue. If you get up to the 1/2" thick coax it will shock you if you touch it. If you mess with the big coax amplifiers they use for distribution in neighborhoods it can kill you.

Moonlights or known at the dollar store as book lights. Clipped to side of tank or on my light, not sure yet.

If you want to change it from white light to blue, go to a local musical instrument store that sells lighting equipment for nightclubs. Ask for gel sheets. When choosing one, hold it up to a bright light when you look through it. Blue is the hardest color to recreate. Most blue gels look bad. Too dark, too light or just plain icky looking. They usually run about $2.50 for an 8"x8" sheet. You can do the same on a flourescent tube by buying the large sheets and wraping it around it. Gel sheets are made to withstand high heat for long periods. Do not let it touch a halide or halogen lamp directly. They can withstand 1,000 watts at a 6" to 8" distance.

Ok, I give in to peer pressure

Ok, I give in to peer pressure

Since I have made comments in this thread I felt the need to post some of my own "ghetto" even though they don't come close to some of the creativity I have seen on here. You guys/gals are a real inspiration to others that can't just run out and buy the latest and greatest of equipment needed to sustain marine life.

Having a 55 gallon sump/refugium sitting on the floor in my dining room to serve multiple purposes. 1) More water volume for better water stability. 2) A place to grow caulerpa to remove proteins. 3) A place to put skimmer(s), pumps, heater, auto top off, etc. 4) A place to isolate naughty creatures that disrupted the harmony in the reef. 5) A place to grow pods to help feed the reef.

Picture is when I was in the process of changing from a Precision Marine HOT to a Berlin HOT.

Ghetto 4 way lighting! 36" oak moonlight with about 24 LEDS plus 4 LEDS from a 48" 4 lamp PC fixture, 2- 65 watt actinic PC, 2- 65 watt 10k PC from the same fixture and 1- 400watt 20k MH. All inside what was a 55 gallon stand I modified into a hood with top hinged lid and dual front doors.

The thing about this setup is that it was under a year old and I had just moved 20 miles within a couple months prior to taking these pics. This was the first saltwater I had ever done. The lighting was done that way because I kept my SPS at the one end with the return there as well, LPS and softies were mainly all at the other end.

my ghetto chiller is a frozen bottle of water in my sump. drops the temp by about 3 degrees until the ice melts then i swap it out for another one

You mean the first pic? That used to be a very fine plywood. Until I use it for working on hobby related stuff... cutting PVC pipes, breaking rocks into multiple pieces, etc. for many years. :D

And thanks for the compliment. :)

Cheers!
