Filter sock holder.

LMAO!!

I've spent the past few days reading through this entire thread and am amazed at what you people have been able to do (as well as what some of you DARE to do lol). I think I finally qualify to post here.

Here's my protein skimmer I made about 24 hours ago for my 10g display tank sitting inside my 10g sump:

And a red interior car light I've had sitting in my car for several years that I thought I'd put to good use as a moonlight:

my ghetofab wet/dry trickle filter for a freshwater tank i had. to be fair to this build, it actually worked really, really well! problem was my dojo loach and a few other curious fish used to use my pvc overflow as a water slide and end up in my tidy kitty bucket, lol, they never died, but every few days i would have to get them. i tried screens, baffling, everything, they would dig it out, pull it off, etc. just got tired of fishing for my fish! that and i tore down the system to redo it for my wife's system. the pvc overflow was in the DT, i just have it hung over the sump to show it in the picture

its half inch pvc stuck into a water bottle which floats up onto inch and a half pvc. Inside the top 1 1/2 is a snap switch which is wired normally on so when the top of the smaller pvc hits it it turns off, and when the water gets low it deactivates and comes on. The switch is wired to a regular extension cord which the powerhead in the bucket is plugged into. I also have another switch in the line which shuts off if the water in the bucket gets too low.

chaynes,

I am curious to know how that tank of yours is turning out? got any new pics.....there is some really great stuff on this thread but by far I think you take the cake for ghetto fabulous.......

Tank is turning out good, in the process of de-ghettofying it as I got some more light fixtures. Here is a new pic with my suspended live rock, neat thing is I have one hermit crab that somehow made it to the bigger suspended rock and has been living on it for over a week now as it twirls in the current.

And a video of the flow in action.

I like to idea of the suspended rock, would be cool to see zoas growing all over it.

I'm not sure my things even qualify for the ghetto title, but I liked what I've seen here and wanted to give it a try:

First off, I wanted to try out my 150w MHs and if they will have good penetration in the tank. I didn't have any way of hanging them. This is what I came up with:

What do you think of the penetration? :)

Second off, I needed a way to check several shades for dampening the power of the sun since the tank is outside. Here is what I made for easy removal and replacement:

Last but certainly not least, I wanted some charcoal power to clear up the water a bit. I didn't have any place to put the charcoal (go figure) so I suspended the charcoal with some limestone gravel on a pipe in .5x.5m container bags. The charcoal bags go in the small space between the first and second chamber to insure most of the water has contact with it. The water is clearing up bit by bit. There is a total of 45kgs of charcoal in these bags:

how is the top part made? im wonder how the cup is still and not leaking fluid back into the tank

I'm betting pipe/top glued in to the cap, and then threaded on..

I wonder would there be enough people interested in a "ghetto rig challenge" It was mentioned at least one other time in this thread.

Be interesting, set a cost/per gallon rule, and judge on inventiveness, cost, effeciency and stuff like that. I have a freebee 50 gallon that might make in to a personal challenge. Funtional 50 gallon reef on $100...

I made holes in the cap and the bottom of the tupperware, crazy glued the two where the holes meet, slipped some 3/4" flexible tubing through the holes and siliconed around the tubing on both sides so it won't leak.
