Ghetto Rig

This thread is my new favorite!!! Perfect way to wrap up a long day. Here is my DIY solution to reduce microbubbles from the turbulance created from my overflow draining into sump. I have since had a pro box built that I designed.

will be tagging along, lots of great ideas. Besides the less you spend on your setup the more you can dump into corals and livestock, as im sure everyone can agree you can't "ghetto rig" livestock.....other than fishing for it yourself..lol

Whoops. Posted the wrong two links at the end of my last post. The cat litter bucket was replaced with this.

I made an "overflow box" with household items.
Tell me what you think.

Used a water bottle for the overflow box. Made a siphon with a garden hose. Put the water bottle on a stand to get my water level where I wanted it (hard to tell from the pics but it's just above the wood trim in the tank and the water bottle). Drilled a hole in the water bottle just below the waterline and pressure fitted a hose. This hose drains into my sump. The sump can't flood because there is no siphon from the water bottle to the sump, just gravity feeds the sump.

In the sump I put the return pump as high in the water as I could. This way if my overflow box breaks siphon I won't flood my tank. The pump will move about a gallon of water into the main tank before it runs dry and that's not enough to flood the main tank (I tested this theory out to be sure). If I've thought this through properly the only thing that could happen is the siphon breaks and the pump runs dry and might possibly burn up. $20 pump vs 10 gallon flood? I'll buy a new pump.

Here is what it looks like all together.

I am planning on doing this for my 20 gal nano. I have an 18 gallon container I would like to use for the sump

a couple questions though

what size tubing do I need from tank to bottle, and bottle to sump(1/4 or 3/8?). also what would a good return pump be?

that sock got me laughing. whats in it thats giving it its shape. looks like a bottle.

i forgot i had this one. the entire sump. i have body scrubbers, alot of color to add. brings out the color in the fish well. its a t shirt bag that i made to hold purigen. after a few weeks it literally shredded apart due to the bacteria of something eating the cotton. lucky i caught it early and didnt lose alot of purigen. its all being held up by oil pans.works well and cant be more proud of it. :wavehand::wavehand::wavehand::wavehand::wavehand:

Here is my home made wet/dry trickle setup on a 29g Reef in my bedroom that i set up in Feb 2009.

Fishfilter2.jpg

These are the completed filter towers and overflow line.

FilterDrawer.jpg

Here is one of the drawers that i drilled holes in the bottom for drainage and stuffed with dollar store pot scrubbers.

FilterFlossDrawer.jpg

This is the top two drawers with filter floss to remove large detritus. Its since been switched to the blue and white pad type floss. Also i sandwhich carbon between two layers of floss.

I used an 18g rubbermaid container for the sump and I have a small tetra pond pump for the return pump.

Shot of the tank a week after it was set up.

How does the water start flowing from the tank? I saw you said that it starts with water in the bottle or something. What bottle? Learn me! lol

im sorry, the sock wins the ghettofab invention of the month award!

there should be a ghettofab invention of the month award, starting now and the first winner is the sock!

YOU SIR, ROX OUR SOX!
