need some help

need some help

I recently acquired a new tank and all the support equipment. The light fixture is a Giesemann four foot. It has four ho florescent tubes, two metal halides and a small bulb maybe a quartz. Circa 2010 If its the same age as everything else. Its a silver fixture if that helps. My issue is it has no ballast or power supply , the light has a cord to a multi pin plug. I have no manual and I am assuming to identify it you would need to have power to read the display as I see no serial number anywhere on it.
I could sure use some advice as to how to identify it and where to find the right components to get it to run.I would love to get it into service.
thanks

^^^^^ Contact Coralvue and see if they have a adapter for the plug, I use a the Giesemann ballast that came with it. I think the only tricky fixture is the one with one plug for the whole light, my Infinity models has 3 plugs coming out of it.

Razor T5

Razor T5

I posted here earlier debating a spectra. I opted to purchase 2 Razor T5 54W units and leaning toward 2 Orphek V4 Compacts.

I just received the Razor and not sure how to change ballasts when needed. Any Videos or Pics? I took the end plate off and man its tight in there.

I also see that the wire insulation does not enclose fully in the plastic screw on grommet, not sure i like that. I returned one unit due to this and they sent 2 more (one got lost in mail then landed). Both of these have the same issue. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Just picked up the unit, beautiful. A year old bargain. Powder coating is top notch, refreshing from todays plastic rubbish.

Razor T5 Ballast Change

Razor T5 Ballast Change

Anyone have experience changing ballasts on the Gmann Razor T5?

I just received mine and it looks to be challenging....

appreciate any info/pics/video on experience.

Thanks,

Wiring a Luxcore Ballast to a Spectra

Wiring a Luxcore Ballast to a Spectra

I have a 24" Spectra and am having trouble getting the metal halide to fire. I have the Luxcore 250 W- 400 W ballast. I wired the ballast to the Spectra attachment as follows:

white to brown
black to blue
green to green

I first tried plugging it into my DJ strip. Turning on the power does not light the bulb. I can hear only the faintest hum in the ballast (so silent I am almost not 100% sure its there). I then tried to plug the ballast directly into a GFI outlet and it trips the GFI instantly.

Any suggestions on what is going on here?

I did give it a try (I have a second bulb but chanced it with my radium bulb). Nothing when I switched the wires.

I thought I'd update a few additional pictures and maybe someone will spot what I'm doing wrong.

Here is a picture of the full connection - White to brown at the top, blue and back in the middle, and green to green/yellow in the center.

But when I look at the white plastic plug supplied by Giesemann for the ballast connection, I see fine print on the plug as follows (from bottom to top)

1,2, +, N, 3

Is it possible that the connections somehow don't go straight through? Is Neutral usually white?

Do you have a voltage meter? You need to put the lead into the metal screw where the wires are to see if there is current. Warning 110 so you need the appropriate tester safety concerns When my Infinty went out the connector (they are much smaller than yours) and there is a little fuse in them. So I replaced and it works.

Also post for general electric help lots of electrician here and they are very helpful.

Whites neutral and if it Trips the outlet you have a short someplace be it the ballast itself or the connections.

Unfortunately I do not have a voltage meter. I'll have to pick one up for sure. A good thing to own.

Are you sure every wire is seated correctly and firmly.

I will test and try each one. So I have an update. I did switch the white and black wires coming out of the ballast. This would make sense based on the following color chart below

I now get a brief flicker when starting the ballast (and no breaker trips) but the light doesn't light. It just flickers for a second and that's it. At least I'm making some progress. Defective ballast?

Can anyone tell me the width of the geissemann spectra unit? Am wondering if a 24 inch geissemann spectra will be enough to cover a 30 in x 30 in area.

Currently running 2 250 watt halides and planning to convert to the spectra .

Tank is mostly only acroporas . Hence a little concern about the coverage .

Abhishek

Hey Abi, I run a 24" Spectra with 1x400 watt Radium 20k's and 4 blue+ t5's on my 36x36x16" tank and it covers it well. 30x30 should be no problem, depending on the height. I would go with a 400 watt bulb. It's an awesome light for sure!

The unit itself is 24"x17" wide. Just measured it!

Hey Maximus ,

Thanks for checking it !!! Yeah great call on the 400 watt !
Do you find it too blue with radium 400 watt and then 4 blue plus ?
Am thinking of a height of 10-12 inches from the water surface .

Regards,
Abhishek
