Gobie74's wide peninsula 200

Any updates ie pictures video(s) lol

I don't have access to a video camera, even my phone doesn't have one since its only a (relatively) old iPhone 3G. Wish I knew someone with one, but I don't. So pictures, maybe, video, probably not going to happen for a while.

Having had the tank for several months now, questions for you...

Are you happy you went with acrylic? (your previous tank was glass right)

Have you ever thought about staggering your light modules in a zig zag pattern for broader coverage? Overall, are you happy with SPS growth with the LEDs?

I am planning a 72x36x28h tank and am debating the durability of glass vs the strength/clarity of acrylic and I am considering switching from T5 to LED so your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Thanks- CJ

Acrylic vs. Glass huh? I'll tell you this, after seeing the clarity of the acrylic, I don't think I can ever go back to glass. Now with that said, there are some drawbacks of course.

One being the potential to scratch easier so you have to be a lot more careful cleaning it. Since I don't have kids or other pets, its not so bad in my situation, ymmv.

Another thing is the cleaning is a bit harder. With a glass tank, you can get a magnetic scrapper with an actual rough surface that can remove hard to remove gunk from the glass. With acrylic, you need a scrapper that isn't going to scratch the tank, and even with a killer magnet, I still have to put my hands in the tank more often and remove stuff from the acrylic.

But when it is clean, it's beautiful!

As far as staggering the LEDs for more spread, thats not an issue anymore. The upgrade I did to the Gen 2 AquaIllumination lights a few months back took care of any spread issue I may have had. The optics in the Gen 2 to so much better of a job at spreading out the light, its light night and day between Gen 1 and Gen 2. And Gen 2 is SO much more powerful. I generally don't have them higher than 50% power on the whites, if I had known, I probably would have gone with the white, blue, royal blue pucks instead of the 2 white 1 blue pucks.

I'm starting to see some really nice growth from my SPS now. It slowed down / stopped for a while there after transferring to the new tank, but things are picking up again. In the old tank, I was getting great growth from the LEDs. So no problems there, LEDs will grow SPS and clams just fine.

Thank you so much for the input.

So you would have like to have gotten the new sol blue LEDs? I considered those as well but I was afraid they'd be too blue. I have all t5 now and tend to favor a slightly warn look. I wonder if you could mix and go half sol white and half sol blue...?

The reason I say I would have gone 1 white, 1 blue, 1 royal blue is because the white is REALLY powerful. Having two up at 70% was causing some issues for the corals, 100% is right out. It doesn't look all that great either. But 50% on the two whites and 100% on the blue looks great.

If you're doing something custom, I bet 1:1 white to royal blue would look good.

The final piece of hardware I needed to have everything controlled by the Profilux came sometime last week and I finally got around to getting it all hooked up tonight. That was a serious project!

I write more about it later, but til then, here's a blurry picture of the ORA mandarin, still doing well and growing...

wow man, great build :) and great work with the lights! I have been looking for LEDs for a while now and i keep on bouncing between too many options!

Regardless im going to tag along :)

I've been a complete slacker with pictures, sorry about that. But I had a bryopsis problem again and raising the Mg to 1600 this time has had some undesirable side effects, namely a big RTN problem. All of smaller frags died off quickly, the larger colonies don't look all that great, and the LPS and specifically the Trachophylia look pretty bad.

I've been doing a lot of water changes lately to get the Mg down, but it really takes some massive amount of work to drop the Mg level :(

excellent job, the tank looks great. im close to pulling the trigger on some AI's and a profilux controller myself, so you may have just convinced me.

how happy are you with the profilux?

Hey im new to this and i got a 90g and i want to make it into a mixed reef. What type of LEDS did you get and what site did you get them from? will they fit under a canopy too?

I was out last night to grab a purple cap frag and see the tank. Absolutely amazing. The LEDs and the controller are beyond imagination. He set up a simulated storm with lightning, and all I can say is WOW! As we were leaving, Shelby commented "You need to do that with your lights." Yeah, ok. She wouldn't volunteer up any cash either.

The pictures do not (and can not) do it justice. Amazing tank.

Grr, nevermind, doesn't seem to be working. Was trying to embed a video from YouTube. :(

Ha, ok, now it seems to be working.

Nice rimless acrylic tank!
Do you think 3/4" thick acrylic can handle the water without bolt out/bent in the middle of the tank? I was told we need at least 1.25" thick acrylic to do a rimless tank with this dimension.

It's 3/4" acrylic.

Its filled to about 100 gallons now. Going to leave it going overnight. I calculated about 50 gallons to go until the point where I want to stop to let the cycle start.

Can't see into it right now, its a giant sandstorm. I have an old canister filter stuffed with floss on it now to help remove some of the particulate that came in the sand.

I'll post some more pictures this weekend.

It does bow a bit, but the manufacturer made some braces for me to support it, they are probably shown in a picture somewhere, if not I'll take a new one. If you want completely rimless, I would go with the thicker acrylic.

Awesome build! Might I ask for a picture of the tank and how it fits into the floor plan of the house? Does it get in the way or no?

Are the pictures on page 1 not the kind of thing you're looking for? As far as getting in the way, only sort of, there's still ways around it, its just a bit longer of a walk.

I just went through your entire build thread. Amazing. I just recently upgraded to a 65g, but have been dreaming about a larger peninsula tank. Your tank is beautiful and you did an amazing job setting everything up. I especially liked the OCD colored plumbing. I might incorporate that into my plumbing should I redo it in the future.

My question for you is about your flow. How are the MP40's working for you? Do you think they are enough for your tank? IMO I'd think you'd need a bit more flow for such a long tank. Did you consider a closed loop system when you started planning this upgrade? Thanks again and congrats on a beautiful tank.

Greg

The MP40s are usually running at 100% in the full/green mode, so there is a lot of flow in there. If their weren't, I don't think that green and purple monti at the end would be growing like they are. The purple especially, its crazy.

I did consider having the returns exit to the opposite end of the tank, but abandoned that idea.

Overall I don't think the flow is bad at all, but I'm always open to ideas.
