Good days...bad days....

I'm just venting here....not for any reason but to say that days like today, reef wise...make me want to chuck the hobby. my heater busted in the 90g. never shut off....losses so far include the blue spot jawfish, four heads of frogspawn, two acan colonies...possibly more. right now, i just feel like throwing up...and not from the dancing, cosmos and street meat...:sad2:

yup. gotta do it. i'm just sitting here in the bedroom waiting for the next "i'm melting, i'm melting". seriously. you guys have NO IDEA how hard i take this....well, a couple a people do...but they are probably sleeping right now.

I had the same thing happen a couple years ago in a 75gal. Some of the pieces lost im sure i will never find again.

I feel your pain kat. ATO mishap yesterday everything seems ok except for my favorite, my gold and platinum hammer. Of course it is always the favorite that kicks it. hopefully it will be fine but shed a lot today.

Until I got the Reefkeeper Lite, this was the stuff of my nightmares. Sorry this happened to you. On your next visit, I'll show you the fan hookup I have and give you the run down on some of the things the controller can do for you. Honestly, if you don't use it for anything other than the heater and a fan, it's worth the $99.

Yeah,had I actually looked into a controller ,I would of bought the reefkeeper lite.At 99 dollars it would of been a great investment for me.I dont really care for alot of gagetry and assumed controllers were still high priced,going with the timers ,by the time I add then up it wasn't worth it and they vary in accuracy form one another.

Soooo sorry to hear Kat.
The one time it happened to me, it was in my freshwater angel tank. Angels must have been looking out though, because the water made it to 90F, but didn't lose a single fish.
Hoping for the best for you. I know you've been loading it in preparation for moving a lot to the new tank too.

Sorry about your loss.
I really hate the heater designs out there.
I dont understand why they dont incorporate two thermistors --- one as a backup to shut things down if the system overheats. It adds such a small cost that there is no reason to not do it.

Does anyone know if Reef Lite has an emergency mode to shut off the heater if the temp probe fails?

sorry to hear about this.

Suggestions: aforementioned controller.

Use two smaller heaters rather than one large heater. Think minimum wattage necessary when it comes to purchasing heat.

How do you keep the tank warm in the winter? I'd love to nix heaters from my system but in this old drafty house my tank temp would drop too much without them.

sorry to hear about the lost bum heaters... such a simple device that can cuase so much havoc, this is a reason i held up from buying heaters already, i like the idea of having them on a controller,

btw what brand is it?
what was your tank temp when you noticed?

Heaters are a big problem in the hobby.I don't trust any of them. I once cooked some Oscars I had for years that way.
I now use several smaller heaters instead of one larger one along with a ronco controller.I set the controlller at 78 degrees and the individual heater thermostats 2 or three degreess higher at around 80 degrees. That way the heaters are always on when the controller goes on. If the controller sticks on, which it never has ,the heater thermostats take over within a couple of degrees.
