griss' Tank Upgrade Thread

Just wet sanded the two joints. 1 might be done. 2 started later due to having to get a sheet of drywall and weather keeping that from happening in a timely fashion and will require more work.

Also, treated myself to a Christmas gift. Bought a (2) battery, charger and multitool set as I only had one 18v battery left and didn’t have a multitool. So, once the mud is done, I’ll be able to finish cutting out the plumbing access through the wall without borrowing the son’s multitool.

is it soup yet?
Multitool. You mean like a Dremel or rotary tool? Oh Oscillating saw?
I usually buy corded tools still. They are cheaper so you can get more.
Rotozip is cool but scary. Cuts wallboard and countertops. Microwave ovens too. Oops.

Ugh, I hate aquascaping. My type A won’t allow me to be happy. I played with superglue and aragamax tonight and made what I thought was a cool structure but can’t figure out how to place anything. I’m terrible at aquascaping.

I plan to place the dry rock and then add a 2-3” sand bed since I want Jawfish.

Just find some structures online that you like and copy them. Your pieces are different so it will be different. Overthinking will lead to something unnatural looking, but once it's grown in no one will be able to tell anyway.

The mesh on bottom is to keep rocks not pushing on sand creating dead spots?
Maybe can use just small part under the rocks i think to place in my bottom not all...

It’s to keep the rock from creating scratches and pressure points in the glass. Probably not necessary but an old school way of doing things.

When i was in Italy i also made hole in wall but apartment was rented. Owner wanted huge amount of money for repair i told him this is bricks not drywall. hahaha Nice. Remember one think from my own experience - when i placed filtration in storage area and cross the wall to tank i used hard pipes first than flexible hose as in 1995 and again 1996 if i remember well was huge earthquake in Italy 6 scale Righter and tank with stand moved 20 cm from wall. I was on 3th floor happy that i used flexible and reserve extra lenght behind tank. Never made mistake placing only fixed pipes. Allow some movements in any case. Whenever you need to move tank or stand ect flexible will be helpfull.
See photo screenshot from video Hi8 Sony cassette in this time only way to record: crossing wall to room with hard pipes and than flexible hose...
Turst me Griss do it the same put some flexible connection behind.

Another coat of mud today. Mudding around the plumbing & cord hole is proving a bit challenging. So, that might slow progress.

A friend came over to hit a few LFS and brought me some dry rock. It will need a good cleaning but, I’m really grateful.

We went to a store (Petland) I’ve never been to before. They didn’t have a huge selection of SW livestock but everything there looked really good.

Then, we went to Liberty Reef that’s under new ownership. They have a lot of really nice LPS. They did have a stunning A. Millepora but, since I’m dealing with multiple issues with the current tank, I didn’t buy it.

I did come home with a Hanna Ca checker though.

It will be interesting to see what you think of that checker.

So far, I’ve been happy with their checkers for PO4, pH, and Alk. The NO3 gets good reading but is labor intensive.
I agree, good checkers.
I’ve had mixed results with CA and MG but it will be interesting to see your view.

I don’t have an Mg yet, still using Salifert.

CA is still a bit more complicated/labor intensive than Alk, pH and Phosphate but, not bad.

Now that you’re saying that, let me grab my Salifert Ca test and compare.

lol, after I posted that, I went downstairs and started to test with Salifert and remembered I did additives after I tested with Hanna. I’ll try to remember to test with both tomorrow.

I got wide swings 380-524ppm with the CA checker.
The sample size is very small.
Not sure what I’m doing wrong, maybe inaccurate sample size.IDK.
Salifert consistently gives me an expected number, the colour change is fast and easy to see.
Same with MG and Salifert. Great for the money tests IMM.
