Grouper

Jason asked me to post a shot of the Miniatus Grouper once he got comfortable in his surroundings, so here is that beautiful boy:

He is....that is his posture for feeding...I drop a sliverside or krill in and he snipes it...he's fast too!!!

And he is not bothering anyone else in the tank. He gets fed twice a day.

Wow Nice Fish, Looks like he could eat most fish I have In either tank though! I just scored a Randalls Gobi/Red pistol shrimp combo that was calling my name.

Me Too

Nice Bill!! I picked up 2 of the Purple Firefish last Tuesday.

I looked at them too and will get a pair, Just couldn't resist the Gobi/Shrimp combo. Now to get them together In the tank Is another thing, As they went seperate way's once they hit the water. Hah Figures...

2 peculas, a foxface, lavender tang, sailfin, kole tang, green chromis, royal gramma, six line wrasse, and a deep water blotchy anthias. SO far peaceful coexistence in my 180...

He will be going into my 220 FOWLR that I am in process of setting up in a few months.

Sorry, but that combo will not work! That grouper will eat the percs, chromis, gramma, six line and any anthias that fit into its mouth. The length of the fish does not matter, if the fish fits in the mouth the coral hind will try to eat it. It will fit what it can in and chew the fish in half. I had a 4" one reach 8" in one year.

I am more than aware of what I am doing..long term it won;t work..right now it is fine and well fed. As I stated, it will be going into my 220 FOWLR within a few months.

what is the best way to get a fish out od a DT? my yellow tang is being a buthead and i am hesitent to use a taser in the tank.

If you can't remove the rock easily, A fish trap will be needed and patience, Plus the ability to stop feeding until you catch it.

If you have something big enough to put all the water in I would recommend draining the tank and then the fish will be very east to catch. I know it sounds drastic and that is what I thought too but I have done it a few times and it is actually a lot less stressful to everyone in the long run.

edit: If it is in the 290 then that might be hard to do. :)

I used a number 8 fish hook with shrimp on it to catch a 5" grouper from a friends tank last week. I hooked him on the third strike. It took less then a minute. No need to drain water or move rocks.

I've used a fish trap before several times to get fish.

I've also become exasperated, fed the tank and did some lightning fast ninja move to net the fish when he came to the top.

this fish is still way to small for a hook. I really don't like the idea of hooking as if they swallow it there is massive damage.

If you are talking about the grouper I bet you could catch it with a hook. You can get tiny ones. I used to catch tiny bluegill and bass out of a creek with them. I've caught them as small as two or three inches before. I don't think that would work for the tang though.

Grouper will more than likely swallow the hook..they have gude mouths an throats and cam swallow something up to 75% of their size...so no hooks for me on this fish.
