Gyre pump

Well, i have to tell you I have been a china product lover for a while, but now I do appreciate more companies that put research and effort on the new products way more than clones with out any warranty, and if you say anything Ed, about my previews words on the subject, I will have to confiscate the Gyre to give it to Chris for testing

You were a tough nut to crack. :-)

What would you like to know? I think most things were discussed already.

Next updates would be year later - Does it still work? :)

I left mine in alternate mode for now with 50% forward and 100% reverse. Reverse is really inefficient at moving water due to the paddle design, but does move it some. I find it useful to add some extra movement in front of the powerhead. That area otherwise is fairly calm, at least in my tank.

Not so much interested in pump updates as user updates. Things like do you like the pump, would you buy it gain, effect on corals, and possible breakdowns or repairs that were needed, etc. Also what you didn't like about it, and maybe even experiences with the cleaning issue.

I moved my Gyre opposite of my MP60 and put the MP40 on the back wall. Crazy water flow in the tank right now. The Xenia on the opposite side of tank is requesting I remove the Gyre immediately. :-)

Good to know info. Thanks. Your locations are not very far from me, are you members of FRAG by any chance

Mine is on opposite side from Tunze 6095 and return pump outlet. Return is pushing along back wall, tunze along front wall of the tank. Return is obviously a constant flow, tunze is mainly doing a 0-100 pulse at about 1-3 min intervals. So sometimes flow from the gyre can make it through freely, sometimes tunze fights it a bit.

I would buy it again, the only complaint I would have is price. While it is cheaper than new vortechs or tunzes, I feel all 3 are a bit overpriced. But then again you can find a lot of things that seem to cost way more than you should in any hobby lol. My most recent one was with different road bike components.

But with that price tag you do get a lot of flow that can't be beat by any other pumps and quality of the components seem fairly decent. The only part that looks a bit fragile to me except for the ceramic shafts are the blades on the rotor (one of mine in fact came in broken, was one of the spare ones). CoralVue sent out the replacement already. Having said that, you do get double of most of the moving parts, marketed for the ability to do AA or BB flows (so one side pushes in one direction stronger than the other and vice verse when rotation is reversed). I feel they are more there as spare parts :)

I have tried AA/BB stuff, but I do not see it working well for horizontal mounting, maybe vertically it would do better. In either case that cuts flow in half compared to the strong flow of AB, but you do get some strong flow in both rotation directions, versus strong forward and very weak in reverse.

I don't think I renewed my membership to FRAG this year. I am a member of ORCA but haven't been to a FRAG meeting in a while.

OK, I think I'm sold. Now if I can only get a hold of Salty Supply I'd run over and get one.

One last question: I know the Gyre is not Apex ready yet, but if I connected the Gyre to the Apex and just turned it on and off while the automatic feeder was doing it's thing, does the Gyre remember it's settings when it comes back on?

I believe the response from Coralvue was the pump does remember. I just don't know how much it remembers. :lol2:

I have mine on alternating. Right now it is in forward mode. I turned the pump off, waited a bit and turned it on. The pump went right back to where it was. What I don't know is if the timer stayed in check. Meaning, it has been in forward mode for 3 hours and supposed to switch in reverse after 4 hours. I don't know if the timer reset and I am back to 4 hours of forward mode or just one hour left.

Thanks. That's all I need to know. As long as it resumes where it was, if the timing is off its something I can live with. Salty Supply is sold out. So I placed an order on Amazon. Should have it by the end of the week.

Yes.

It states this in the manual.

I don't want to get this discussion off track but there literally is no comparison. To me the Jebao stuff is no more than over-powered maxi jets.

Not even close. I have Jebao's and the water movement isn't even comparable to the strength of the Gyre. In addition, the thing that sold me was the elimination of dead spots via the gyre type flow. That is its main selling point that normal conical power heads simply cannot do. I do still however keep one Jebao running on else mode to create some turbulence against the Gyre

My sand has been sparkling clean since I added the Gyre. A sales point in itself.

Pete,

Didn't know you added a Gyre, glad to hear it is doing a good job in your tank as you have a lot of stuff to move water around.

Question to everyone who has one at this point...

Do you think it is to much flow for a 3' long tank?

Jack

I think you'd be fine at a lower setting.

I agree with Pete, it would work fine but you would lower the intensity. Or if you wait till January the smaller 35W version is going to be released.
