H. Magnifica Ritteri Care

Ritteri Update

You need to see if somebody or LFS have some. A few days, it is likely going to be too late. The sooner treatment start for these animals, the better the out come.

I write this with a heavy heart, but I felt it important for ALL new and old Ritteri owners. I ordered Cipro regular ground, and it took 3 full days longer than they said it would to deliver. The morning I left town on business it looked very good:

A day later my son called and said it was looking pretty bad and I asked him to move it to the quarantine tank. I called all over town, vets,a zoo, more vets. No one would prescribe the cipro. The cipro came a day later and by then the anemone was close to mush. Tried treating for 3 days cipro, water changes. No avail, smelly mush when I got home. This thing took a dive within two days. Minh was correct:

DO NOT WASTE TIME. IF IT DEFLATES OR SHOWS ITS MOUTH AT ALL TREAT IT
TREAT THE RITTERI AS A PRECAUTION OR IT WILL DIE.
HAVE CIPRO ON HAND BEFORE YOU ORDER THE ANIMAL.

Needless to say, next to my one tank crash, one of the most painful experiences of my 20 year reef keeping history. PLEASE treat these anemone's automatically as a precaution. This anemone looked great for 3 weeks and I was so exited. I am so sorry I did not heed the warnings quick enough in this thread and killed this beautiful animal. Now all I have is a 3 day late bottle of Cipro. :headwally:

That's a bummer to hear, but like you just learned the hard way, myself and many other mag keepers had similar situations and outcome.
I took it light at first, I did not realize how fast they go downhill and how long it can take to get cipro, and I even paid extra for expedited shipment.

When getting a mag or gig, it is a must to have a qt and cipro at the ready before they even arrive.

It's a drag but in the end it's a small price to pay, and they are usually headache free once treated properly.
My experience and most I've read on here, given proper conditions mags and gigs typically stay put.
I'll take that initial headache over the endless wandering and other issues that usually come w/ other species.
At least you now know and will be better prepared.

Sorry to hear but now I need to do the same for mine. Going to get a hospital tank tomorrow. Luckily I already have Cipro. Like Joseph mine seemed to be OK since I just picked it up last week and it lasted 2 months while at Petco and was eating. I have been keeping mine in a basket at the surface with lots of water flow and light. I knew it deflated here and there just like my BTA but now I'm worried to start qt tomorrow.[emoji27]

Below are pics when I first got the Mag on Sept 4.

OK, So I woke up this morning and was in a panic. This is with no light just flash, I will note that the temp was 78.6:

Then less than an hour later mouth was closed, puffed up and seemed normal, fans kicked on and lights on, temp 77.4:

It has been this way for 3 hours now. Sorry for poor phone pics. Is the temp swinging too much? I am getting the Cipro just in case, don't want to stress it with a treatment if not needed, but will have it ready.

Did no one not notice that the fans were off prior and opened up again once there was water movement ?

Fans? Do you mean powerheads? That's insignificant, there's a few reasons they could've been off and it wouldn't have caused the anemone to deflate like that; Heteractis magnifica should never look like the first picture, very clear sign of infection.

Be sure to start your own thread, good luck with treatment. :)

Ignore that paul guy. Based on what he's said on other threads, I think he's just trolling.

I think the owner of the deflated nem now knows that it's critical to treat deflated nems right away. And again, with mags, they respond very well to Cipro treatment, so there's no real need to wait it out to see if the nem will get better on its own.
