hair algae - why now?

Well as I live and breathe - hi Gary.

We recently lost our old yellow tang. I've gotten two sail fins (different occasions) but both died within a week. I want some tangs!

Tangs wont eat the GHA if it is really long.... they like it when it is close to the rocks and short otherwise its worthless.... I know my Sailfin tang and my Orange Spotted Rabbit fish won't touch my bryopsis when its long... when i go in and "mow it down" they go after it all day long... in addition to my now extinct neon green toadstool... damn you rabbitfish!!!!

I agree 100% you have to remove the majority and the Tangs will take care of the rest, Tang are the best clean-up crew you can have.

check your phophates.... I bet they are pretty low. Mine always are when i have bryopsis outbreak.... GHA and Bryopsis feed on the phosphates.... so ur tank is very clean

Yeah - there's not much in the water. But if I have something else competing for the PO4, then maybe there would be less for the GHA and it would be reduced. From what I understand, PO4 is a limiting nutrient for algae in general.
