Halide Q & A

looking for some advice on number wattage of halides bulbs required for an LPS dominant tank with the following dimensions 39" L x 22" W x 25" H, bulbs used will be 14.5K any supplemental lighting will be by led strips.

In the UK only 150w/250w and 400w available.

Thank you in advance.

150's will be more than enough, use two in decent reflectors and there won't be anything you cannot keep happy.

Thank you for the response. Just been investigating what is available in terms of actual fixtures. Options are Giesemann, Infiniti 1 x 250w with 4 x 24w T5 or 2 x 150w or 2 x 250w both with 2 x 54w T5. Only issue with the larger light unit is that it is longer than the tank by 20-cm (8") and I am not sure about the position of the halides if this would be a problem.

Would it be possible to light a 72x30wx22h with a pair of 250w MHs?

I have had T5 and LEDs and want to try something new.

That is asking a lot if you want complete coverage, better off with 3-250's or be ok with incomplete coverage.

Yes you could. I would contactHamilton and tell them what you are wanting to do, they do have some large reflectors that would work.

The 250 watt Radium will do best with the M80 because it is a HQI bulb in single ended form. Many 250 watt bulbs are designed for the M58 ballast. If you are not positive what bulb you want to run, go with the electronic ballast, it will fire and run them all, though not all will be run as designed. The electronic gives the most options for bulb choices, but if you have done your research and know the Radium or other HQI bulb is your choice, get the M80.

It is a good idea to pick your bulb, then get the appropriate ballast for that bulb. If you don't know for sure which bulb, met the electronic ballast.

im going with the aqua medic 24" 150w hqi/t5 combo

im running 14k phoenix bulbs but not sure about the t5's since there are only 2..

what do you guys think?

This ballast okay? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Aqua-Medic-...947?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43a951bc43

not trying to go to crazy spending

Here is the fixture.. i know that i have a 9" deep shallow tank but you guys are getting me worried that i should have went with a 250W... just dont want to burn my corals and i dont want to hang my fixture 15" above the tank!!! :eek2:

I guess the 150W does make sense

Heres the tank

I just switched my lighting up. Tank is 20" deep. I was using Radion G2 w 4 T5's. I'm going to hang a Sfiligoi 400 watt pendent above the tank starting 10" above water. I plan on starting the light schedule of 4-5 hrs then increase 1/2 hr every 3 days or so. This is my first time w MH so can you all please guide me. Am I starting correctly? I know 400 watts is a lot but I went w this wattage w intentions of using it in the future on a larger tank.

Bulb is Radium and ballast is Hamilton M135 I think thats the correct number but it's the pulse start mag. ballast. Thanks
