Halide Q & A

That would be silly for your tank, it's only 9" tall. Read up on photoinhibition.

LOL i know. Just wanted to see what you would say :love1:

I was thinking to get a 250w system and run a 20k radium though... you think that is also to much light? for my tank?

I have had what you might call success with 150's.

The Phoenix on a 24 gallon aquapod can be a lot of light. Raise the light as high as you can. If you cannot raise the light, cut some fiberglass window screen, at least three layers and put them between the light and the top of the tank. Every other week take a layer of screen off. This will help acclimate the corals.

after reading this i think im good

Hello all. I currently have lumenbright de reflectors. Does anyone know if I can change the reflectors to SE as I would really like to run Radium 250w.

Hello I'm new to the forum. I'm setting up a 93 gallon cube. Would 2 400w halides be too much light?
The tank is 24" deep and I plan on packing it with sps.

I've seen alot of people get away with one 250 on that size of tank. Depends on your fixture some have more spread while others tend to penetrate. Imho I'd go with one fixture with little spread 250 will get ya on 24" tank but If your concerned w coverage 2 250's will rock it.

Just wanted to max it out. Want to make sure I have enough light. I have 2 250w single ended halides from my last tank. Would there be any benefit from using the HQI double ended? (besides size)

I think about to switch from ati hybrid to 400w mh..for autunn winter seasons where here we have cold temp.. Were are the BEST Ballast for radiums??

Okay Im picking up 3 Icecap 250w electronic ballasts with Lumenbright 3 DE HQI pendants. Which bulb do you recomend. I have never ran mh only t5. I also plan to supplement with 2 72" bml let actintic strips.. I dont want a real blue but some. I was thinking phoenix 14K. But would want input from experience.

Real PFO magnetic 400w ballast from Europe. Ran radiums at their correct voltage when started and overdrove the bulb meaning you got great growth and color but the bulb only lasted about 6 months. Unfortunately you will have a hard time finding one now. Hamilton technology HQI get pretty close to the PFO, you can also use an electronic on the regular to extend the bulb life to about 8 months which is more blue color. Or on hqi setting which will get you 7 months and the median in terms of color and bulb life between the old pfo and the regular setting on electronic

So I've recently switched from T5 to MH. 2xRadiums on M80 ballasts. They look great. Growth is decent as well. Everything aside, I want faster growth. Plant speed growth. Considering trying out some 10k bulbs for a year to get the tank filled in faster. My radiums are 5-6 months old now.

My biggest gripe about them is that they're mogul hqi bulbs. So...if I want to change, I have to get either different reflectors, or different ballasts...or do I. If I wanted to try, say, xm10k, or even iwasaki 6500k bulbs, could I just use my M80 ballasts or will it torch them. What kind of difference in bulb life would I see with my M80 ballasts versus switching to some galaxy or Coralvue e-ballasts?

Thank you guys.. But PFO are imbossible to find i think..here i can have lumatek , vertex or standard magnetic ballast.. If you know correct ampere i can go to shop and search something right

Hi guys and gals,

I recently put a 14K Phoenix 150HQI light with my Hamilton E-Ballast and was surprised by the pure white light from it (my eyes see no or very little blue.) I guessing it is due to ballast. My question is this, I am now in search of a new lamp that will fluoresce my corals a bit since I have no room for supplementation. Any recommendations are appreciated.

Hi guy. I picked up a Lumatek 120/240v Dimmable Multi-Wattage 250W, I'll be running a Radium 20k. Here in NZ we run 240v so, unable to get the sls male end, it came with the adaptor. I cut the adaptor intending to use the male end like so:

Attached to the lamp cord that came with bare ends.
Firstly, the cut wires are Black, White & Green. Green is ground no matter where you live, but which is the Line/Live/Hot? And which is the 'neutral' (our neutral doesn't attach to ground in any way.)
Secondly, with the bare wires from the lamp cord, attached to the male 3 prong, will it be safe if I use a multitude of seperators/insulators/heat shrink?
Then the male 3 prong pictured can plug directly into the female recepticle on the lumatek!

Hadn't considered the Phoenix 20K. I've been looking at either the XM or the Radium. I'm having a hard time finding pics with either run on an e-ballast. I will likely be changing soon so I'll shoot you a PM once I make my choice and get it in.

Putting halides over my 110 high. They are 250w how high should I put them above the water level. Lumeneric reflectors.
