Yes, and no, it will depend on the reflector, the bulb, the aqua scape, if you supplement and with what. A large reflector designed to spread will help greatly.

If this is the bulb you plan on running, I would suggest one of the new e-ballasts that will run regular M58 style bulbs and also has an HQI or Super Lumen setting in case you decide later to use a European bulb that may be a HQI bulb, such as Radium. This will give you some flexibility in bulb choices.

There are several out there, Lumatek, LuXcore, Galaxy etc etc.

Apologies for digging up an old post...

I think I am zeroing in on the LuXcore 400w Selectable Wattage Electronic Ballast (x2) to replace my Galaxy dual 250w ballast. Do you anticipate any issues running a 250w 14K Hamilton or 250w 20k Radium with the LuXcore ballast?

Not really, the Hamilton should be run on regular 250 watt setting and the Radium on 250 HQI.

I have a standard 75g. Will a Current USA 2x250w + 4x54w T5 too much for the tank? I have not water in the tank yet but would like to be able to any coral.

I would like opinions on my current lights.

i have an oceanic tech 120, awesome tank and i have the factory coralife fixture it came with. Tank is 25" deep roughly.

Current bulbs, 2x coralife 96w actinic, 2x coralife 10k 150w halide, then the 4 dark blue LEDs in the middle.

I like the LED color and dont mind the 2 Actinic bulbs. Im wondering if i should try a different color halide, when everything is on the tank is fairly brighter white in color form the halides. Would going up to 12k or more give me more blue color?

Right now its FOWLR so the halide are not really needed, I'm going to do mixed reef in the near feature so while i have no idea what coral will be added i will deff have some. So are the current bulbs going to be good for growth and color?

14k Phoenix is a great bulb for you, and inexpensive as well as long lasting, you can easily go 14-16 months with a reef and until it just won't fire any more on a FOWLR.

Has anyone had any success growing sps with a 150 watt MH? I have a 24 gallon aquapod with a 150 watt sunpod and a 14k Phoenix bulb. Also any placement advice? I don't want to bleach or burn any corals!

Thanks,
Isabella

I have had what you might call success with 150's.

The Phoenix on a 24 gallon aquapod can be a lot of light. Raise the light as high as you can. If you cannot raise the light, cut some fiberglass window screen, at least three layers and put them between the light and the top of the tank. Every other week take a layer of screen off. This will help acclimate the corals.

400W vs. 2, 175W

400W vs. 2, 175W

I am moving from a 75g (standard) with 2 175W XM 15K bulbs to a 240g (31" tall) and I'm guessing I need to step up to 400W bulbs. I can get a couple more 175W set-ups really cheap, but I'd imagine the point source of 400W penetrates deeper than two 175W located near each other.

Is that correct?

Question to those in the know. I currently have what I consider to be an odd sized tank. It is (40L x 36D x 21T ) or about 120 gallons . I currently have a single 400w MH wit I think a Lumen 2x2 reflector. I am curious as to weather the par will be suffecent to keep sps. So far I have a clam on the sand bed that seems to be fine. I had planned to convert this to led but seems like a second mortgage is needed to do this so if I can get the par needed I may supplement with led since I have 24 RB , 16 tv ang 12 NW . I know I could just throw so t5 or VHo but I have these . I guess the question is do you think this light is giving me the coverage I need and the par as well. The reflector is 19.5 x 19.5

Depending on which reflector it is, you have more than enough light. My tank is 40x40x17 and I use a pair of 150 watters and have no problems at all.

The reflector is 19.5 x 19.5 lumen something it is square . I have it about 15 inches from the water or a little more . I currently have 20k reef optic bulb . I do think I may need to replace as it seems to take about 5 minutes to come on . It is on an electronic ballast . Everything seems to grow , not real quick but probably my fault as I have had a CaRx for about a year and never set it up . I guess that is for another post

Need some lighting/tank advice!!

Need some lighting/tank advice!!

Hey fellow RC'ers!!

I just got an amazing deal on the Giesemann infinity 2x250 + 4x54 T5. I was hoping someone could give me some advice on the smallest tank size I could feasibly go with, without blasting the tank with too light. I'd love to get a 90 gallon bow front, but I'm thinking this may be too small for so much light.

Thanks guys!
