Hang on skimmer reviews: prism pro deluxe VS aquac remora pro VS deltec MCE600

Deltecrules,

What kind tee are you using post ozonizer? You can't use normal plastics, but need to use something that is ozone compatible. That tee is going to get destroyed by ozone, there won't be much left of it depending on how much ozone you are pushing.

I'd swap that out with a larger tee made of ozone compatible materials and slip your ozone compatible airline (tygon, silicone) ***INSIDE*** the larger tee, not over the barbs.

Jim

Thanks for the heads up, I am working on attaining a ozone proof tee.

I guess I'll join in here too. I originally started out with a 55 gal tank lightly stocked. I ran a Prizim Pro that was highly recomended by the LFS. The prizim was usless..... never really collected any nog. It had to be adjusted every day and never impressed me.

From there, I "upgraded to a Remora Pro w/mag 3 and overflow box. I went with the Remora because of all the great reviews the skimmer had. My first imoression was ***???!!!!???? with that huge box in the tank and loud as hell when it was running. I tried every mod to quiet it down.....some worked a little but not great. It pulled some brownish, greenish skimmate but, it would take a couple of days to fill the cup. I then switched to a 90 gal tank and moved the Remora to it. I still skimmed the same for the most part. I worked but not impressed overall.

So, after Christmas this year I decieded that I have had enough. I was reading all this great info about Deltec skimmers and started researching them. Very impressive I thought to myself. So I broke down and droped almost $500 for a HOB skimmer...... All I can say is WOW!!!!!!!!!!! I never knew that some much black, putried, shat could be in my tank!Like everybody else, I have to admit that the skimmate is thick, dark, and smells like a decaying corpse. It really is a set it and forget it skimmer. With the exception of emptying the collection cup and the cleaning of the skimmer and pump every couple of months.

After had used these other skimmers, I really wish that I had saved all the other money and bought the Deltec from day one.

just curious: how often do you have to clean the air hose line that feeds into the venturi of the aquabee pump? doesnt it clog with calcium build up every couple of days?

Does the calcium built up in the housing affecting the performance of the skimmer?
If so, how to prevent it?

I turn off the skimmer when feeding time for 10 minutes to make sure no salt deposits remain in the tube and I poor a cup of ro water down to tube to clean it three times a week.

I'll chime in here as well. I have had the Ramora and the Romora Pro and now the proud owner of the Deltec HOB MCE 6000. The Deltec is so much better at pulling out the junk. It is unreal how much different the skimmers are. Even though I was able to get my Ramora's to skim they never produced like the Deltec. And the smell is really, really bad...almost makes you gag and hurl. I never got this smell from the Ramora's. And the color is almost black...a thick black sludge grit like liquid. The best thing of all however is that I have noticed is that my tank has come alive. I have never seen the corals color up like this. I had begun to think that I needed new lights or more water changes or something. The Deltec is sooooo expensive but I have to say it is worth every penny. I just feel bad that I took so long to purchase this product. This is the best piece of equipment (besides the lights) that I could have bought for my critters.

ya know i was noticing today that my brains look a lot more puffy and fully expanded . i wonder if it could be from the change in skimmers ?

when you shut the skimmer off it backflushes the tube preventing calcium from building up I think.

I too suffered with a prism, only been set up for 7 months but the thing is useless and i'm sure the nutrients that it isn't removing has contributed some part to the outbreak of hair algae i've been fighting for the last 7 or 8 weeks Good news is though I just ordered my MCE600, should be here tomorrow and I cant wait (if its as good as I keep reading).:D

About that Deltec MCE600...don't freak out when it doesn't seem to work at first. Mine put out huge quantities of microbubbles for a good week. Not fun. Others have said that they run it in hot water for awhile first to rinse off some of the plastic oils that cause this.

Also, it produced so many bubbles that I had to turn the air almost all the way off and raise the collection cup to the top for at least a week or two. Once it breaks in though, it's allll good. I get 3/4 to a full cup each day, consistently.

Enjoy!

I'm lucky if I get a few millimetres of light green watery liquid in the collection cup of the prism in a week. If I have to put up with micro-bubbles for a week, so be it!

All you have to do is run some hot water through the skimmer for about 5 minutes and it will start producing immediately. I put mine in the bath tub under the facuet and let the hot water run through it continously. This gets rid of all the oils and other junk used in production. Works like a charm.

And oilplug is it as good as you've heard :)

clean it once a month

clean it once a month

I cleaned my MCE600 once a month ...max.....
never had a problem EVER with air hose clogging.....
Take the pump out and give the skimmer a careful good cleaning once a month or even once every two months I did sometimes and NEVER A PROBLEM ....best piece of equipment I ever owned in
the hobby.....work of art that skimmer is.

got my camera back so i thought id take a pick of what the foam looks like . this is a pick of when i took off the collection cup to empty it and the foam out of it about one min later.

I don't have a Deltec HOB so I don't know this with any certainty but from the photos of this thing, it doesn't look like if would be very difficult to DIY one. Basically a plastic box with baffles right? Then just throw in a decent needle wheel pump.

Anyone wanna chime in?

D.

Personally i think anyone with intermediate skills with acrylic could make one . The design is not that complex and if you had one in front of you i think it would be rather easy to reverse engineer. The problem would be the pump(Aqua-Bee 2000). you can't stick any old needle wheel pump in there and expect it to perform the same. I'm sure deltec does not sell the pump alone very cheap (looks like it might be $160 plus shipping). I'm "guessing" you could save $100-200 building it yourself depending on if you already have the tools and didn't mess up at all. guess it all depends on how much your time is worth to you. I know how to change the starter/breaks/oil on my car but i often pay someone to do it for me , kinda the same thing.

Hey snarky I installed ozone on my deltec mce600 hangon. Check it out.

Installed a plastic T to the air valve

I'm curious how the skimmer has been performing with the ozone.
