I have a Remora Pro with a Mag5 pump on my 54g. I didn't like the dangling pump or the overflow box. I simply replaced and extended the 3/4" tubing. My pump sits at the very bottom of my tank, out of sight, behind some live rock. It works well for me.
Well, that was me 6 months ago. I finally retired my Remora Pro for 2 key reasons. #1) I really disliked the huge Mag pump in my tank. Even hiding it behind lr didn't satisfy me. And by my observation, I say locating the pump lower in the tank doesn't help the skimmer's performance. #2) For me, the Remora was just so darn inconsistent. With no changes in bio-load, I could follow the same routine with my tank in feeding, nightly dosing 30 ml of B-Ionic, and topping off with RO water. Some days the skimmer would behave normally. Other days for reasons I don't understand; I'd take a morning glance at things and find the gallon jug full of tea colored skimmate. Barometric pressure, alignment of the planets, heck I don't know. Maybe I just was't holding my mouth right.
I replaced it with an ...MCE600. I can honestly say there is simply no comparison in performance between this and the Remora Pro. And I HATED to spend the money on that thing! But the Deltec unequivocally out skims the Remora. It's more quiet and the the pump sits outside the tank. Break-in period? Heck on the very same 54g tank, the Deltec was skimming within minutes ...not days or weeks. I had to hold it back and raise the cup to it's highest setting. It immediately started pulling stinky stuff out of my tank the Remora obviously wasn't getting.
The phrase "you get what you pay for" doesn't always hold true in this hobby. Since this is a European product, one impact on cost is the dollar to Euro exchange rate. It's not a good bargain. The next issue is design differences. The Remora uses patented Spray Injection and the MCE uses a patented needle wheel. I pulled it out to examine it and it's a peculiar looking thing. I think a reasonably skillful person (that excludes me) could probably clone the MCE600 skimmer body. But good luck on the pump and water chopping needle wheel. IMO the pump is the real heart of this skimmer. I used a Maxi-Jet, a Mag3 and a Mag5 on the Remora. Even upgrading to a stronger pump didn't help its performance.
I'm not bashing Aqua-C. Their customer service is great and I still use a standard Remora on my 29g. The Remora is moderately priced, easy to operate, and easy to maintain. But IMO it's a middle-of-the road skimmer. There are some skimmers far worse and some skimmers far better. I don't advocate spending big bucks for the sake of flaunting a name-brand product. But for what I house in my tanks and all I've invested; I simply want a skimmer that works as advertised. As owner and user of these 2 HOT skimmers ... Deltec wins ...decisively.
