were they purchased as a bonded pair ?

Yup, unless firefish pair bond, in a smaller tank, they will likely stage a winner take all, ufc, glass cage, death match.:hmm3:

I bought a pair & they were good for 3 months. I ended up giving one to a friend. They were both beat up pretty good. You would be better off to get one out now.

Are you serious? So you are just letting one of them kill the other? I'm sorry but that is awful. Would you do that with other animals? If your dogs or cats don't get along would you let them fight to the death? Return one of them to the store.

Catching firefish in a stocked aquarium is easier said than done. Catching dogs and cats is not quite the same, nor is the degree of aggression. Oftentimes tearing apart a tank for a single fish is far more deleterious to any remaining fish in the tank.

Wow. I love how ppl get so self righteous and save the whale on here. And like above, unless you have an unstocked aquarium with no other fish or corals, you likely will cause more harm trying t9 get it out..

Letting one fish kill another because one didn't do his homework before buying a fish is the reckless part here. :debi:

It's actually quite easy to catch the aggressor with a trap and a mirror.

As for the unstocked aquarium - you always should have a QT in spare. But in this case even a breeder box would have worked until the fish could have found a new home.

You have an 18 inch cubed tank which explains your ease at getting a fish out. Remove that one or 2 pieces of live rock and scoop it out.

Firefish are one of the most skittish fish species and arent very curious. A fish trap would probably catch all my other fish first, several times that is, before most firefish would get close. All that would stress the community more than catching a single firefish to save its life lol... u say that as you eat your dead chicken sandwich or your dead crab cakes for dinner ha

Though the OP did not buy them as a pr, they are a fish that can be paire up, so a degree of research would have turned up this possibility, not always easy, but possible nonetheless.

The suggestion of a mirror and trap usually works with fish that are more visibly aggressive, but most of firefish aggression goes unobserved by aquarists and is more 'perceived' through displays rather than actual physical attacks.

I don't think a fish trap & a mirror would work. I had a 40 breeder at the time & had to take the tank apart to catch one. I witnessed very aggressive chasing & biting, it got to the point where the aggressive one would chase the other out of a hiding spot just to beat it up some more.

I just took apart the 65 g 3 times in the last 2 weeks over an aggressive fish & it was not a fun time. The first time was to add more rock & change territories & the last 2 times were to remove fairy wrasses. It's taken everyone else in the tank a few days to settle back in from the stress. I'm lucky that this happened when I only had 6 fish in the tank.
