Hello from MN. Thinking about moving to FL.

I'm sick of the winters up here. Need I say more? haha

Lately I've been thinking about moving to FL. I breed clownfish, raise copepods, and aquarium maintenance.

Just wondering where in FL I should be looking, and is there enough demand that I could sell my clownfish and pods to the LFS in the area.

My plan is to move in a year or so.

Thank you

I'm in the NW region. It's a great are but there aren't too many LFS around here.

IMO, you would have good luck going lower florida. Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area would be pretty good.

edit- Just noticed where this was posted. You would do good in this area.

You might want to take a weeks vacation to this area. If you are a diver and collector your best bet is Fort Lauderdale south to the Keys. Prices on homes are not what they used to be. Check things out first. I moved here from the North and never looked back.

Respectfully, if your main source of income is generating income from the following you mentioned, not to say you couldn't be successful in Florida, but this area is a very saturated market.

No doubt you would be able to penetrate through but your margins would be mostly affected.

From my experience on RC, the demographic sub forms with the highest activity of thread postings would logically be the highest area in demand.

However where there is high demand, there already is a high saturation in professional services.

It would be exciting for you to be successful in Florida but it will not be as easy as if you opened up shop elsewhere. (Same goes for southern CA).

Thinking larger picture. By all means you should set up shop where you are most comfortable, but don't rely on the surrounding local market to be your main supporter for your business. You should go in with a new established mind set of selling macro not micro and focus your intentions nationally.

Allot of people put down PETCO but the suppliers of online ordering PETCO are very smart. Let PETCO be the mule and do all the work creating the new business and you simply sit back and supply the livestock! Ride that brand equity for all its got.

You should focus toward the "newbie" masses, not the enthusiasts that know of many alternative options.

Related 2nd idea, you specialize in a species of very hardy livestock. You could always ship yourself and create an on-line store. Way cheaper than a physical store front. "Keep it small, keep it all!"

I wish you great luck, success & fortune!

I just want to mention that I've got no interest in opening a store. I breed and grow my fish at home, and in a greenhouse. My intent is to supply to local stores primarily. I will also ship and do the occasional frag swap.

I'll be going to MACNA, so hopefully I have time to look around and visit some LFS.

As far as competition: There's a guy in south miami who breeds clownfish. If you do a search for "Live Plankton and Rotifers" on miami cragslist you'll find him.

I live in north broward and would recommend moving to West Palm if you want to get more house for your money. Plenty of LFS in north broward and palm beach you could supply :)

Great advice here

As someone who moved to South FL from Minnesota, you won't be able to make steady income the way you are asking about. You can throw a rock down here and hit the next place that is trying to breed/sell marine fish to stores.
