Help me choose which pair of Clownfish

Looking to add a pair of clownfish to my 90g tank. It's a well-established reef tank with some other pretty docile tankmates. Have a 10" wide sebae that hosts a small tomato (will be removed soon) and a 1" RBTA.

My options are:

Paired Dominos
- one has a "misbar" (no white dot on one side)
- sold at the LFS, seems to be there for at least a couple months
- they look healthy, about 1.5", almost 2"?

Paired bonded Onyx
- bred by forum member
- shipped overnight
- not totally coloured up yet, as stated by owner
- haven't seen photos yet

Both pairs are about the same price, Dominos slightly cheaper because Onyx's shipping costs.

My heart is on the Onyx because I really like the look of a fully developed Onyx. The Dominos are more accessible (I'm afraid of livestock being shipped).

Wife's hope is to have them breed, although that's more of a bonus than anything, we realize that they may never breed and that's okay.

What do you think?

Onyx clowns are great especially the ones with full bars. I personally don't like Misbar onyx clowns very much but some people go crazy for them. If I were shopping for Onyx clowns today and had to have them shipped, I would call Booyah's Reef. They have good C-quest lineage and know what they are doing. Rod's onyx are great as well but you probably won't find them. He stopped breeding onyx clowns.

Unfortunately my options are rather limited as I live in Canada and cannot order livestock from our US neighbours (without a lot of red tape which I'm not about to go through all that trouble for).

I will definitely look more into those Onyx that are available to me. What are the chances of them breeding vs. the Dominos? I know it's a bit of a hit-and-miss question but hearing from people's personal experience would definitely help a lot :)

I have a pair of dominos and I love them to pieces.

I'm currently looking for an onyx pair but they have become hard to find suddenly.

When my dominos were in my larger tank they didn't really show up. Now they are in nano and that seems to work better for them. For a 90 I would go onyx just because they should show up a little better.

Interesting behaviour! Why do you think that is?

Are your dominos being hosted by an anemone?

No, they are trying to associate with some flame algae though.

Ah! These fish are truly fascinating. I've seen them with frogspawn as well, and have heard of them with toadstools. What won't they be hosted :hmm5:

My dream scenario is that we can acquire a good healthy pair, be hosted by the sebae, and eventually start making babies. Hopefully the Onyx will be able to do that.

I know some will disagree but my experience has been perculas (like the onyx) seem to have a stronger hosting instinct and therefor will choose an anemone before an ocelaris will(dominoes). Again just my experience.

Good to know, that will score another factor point for me choosing the Onyx over the Dominoes.

My vote is for onyx clown pair too. When I got mine, my sebae nem was about 3 1/2"s across. They took to it within 2 days & 5 yrs later the sebae was dinner plate size. Good luck!

i got an amazing pair of onyx and they are my favorite. i had rods pair that were the most amazing fish ever. go for the onyx and watch them color up as they grow. you wont be dissapointed.

Wow seems like an overwhelming response for the Onyx! I guess my decision is easy here. Hope to report soon when I can get it. :)

LOL I just picked up a pair of onyx. Now I have a pair of dominos and a pair of onyx.

I hope you plan on keeping them in separate tanks; cause if they're in same tank there's a good chance the dominant pair will kill the other...Good luck!

Made our decision and will pick up the pair of bonded Onyx next week. Saw pics of the actual pair and its parents (beautiful specimens), very excited! Will update with pics once we get the shipment next week (I don't mean it's shipped now lol, overnight shipping next week).

I have four clowns, two orange and two black and white, they all live in peace, host two different anemones and paired up within first 3 month in my tank
