Help Me Pick Our Next Fish For QT

Hey everyone,

So after about a year it's time to get some new fish...

Our tank is 470 gallons (120x29x31") with a roughly 200 gallon sump. Fish will be housed in one 40 gallon breeder this time for QT.

Current fish list:
Tangs (Black, Chevron, Yellow, YB Blue)
Wrasses (Flame Pair, Cleaner)
Crosshatch Trigger Pair
3 Pajama Cardinals
Black Ice Clownfish
Anthias (4 Huchtii, 4 Lyretail)

Mixed reef setup. So needs to be reef safe-ish...

If I had 470 gallons to play with, and depending on what kind of corals you have, I'd add an emperor angel, or other large angel. I know lots of people keep them in reef tanks.

Some cool fish that everyone loves (midas blenny, flame hawk) wouldn't even make a dent in a tank that big.

Maybe a copperband? A harem of Royal Grammas could be cool too.

Every tank deserves a purple tang, but that might be tough with established tangs already in there. Lots of room, though.....

Finally, depending on your CUC needs, I love Aussie Harlequin Tusks and big wrasses (banana, red coris, etc.).

Was considering a Midas Blenny this time around.

Had a Purple Tang, look closely at my avatar. He ended up being taken out in the Tang cleanse... Him and the Tomini were killed in a one day span. Problem was that he was a lot more aggressive than the Yellow and Black, and he was 1/2 the size.

I want to keep a Clarion and Bandit, but not sure if I want to add them yet. I put in an inquiry for the price of a Bandit, waiting to hear back. Might want more fish in there first before I start adding expensive fish like some of the other tangs and angels I want.

We added a Copperband with the last batch of QTed fish, but he died in a few days from pure fright of the Yellow and Black Tangs. I don't think he ever left the corner of the tank for 3-4 straight days day or night. Was a shame, my wife's favorite fish and he ate day one through 9 weeks in QT.

Not sure about the big snail CUC eaters. Having some GHA issues, which I can knock back with GFO, but my CUC is pretty small. Just added some snails after QT and put 40 big Mexican Turbos in QT today.

I don't see any Angels on that list of fish Peter! My vote is for any number of the awesome Angels available to us fish nerds.

Was thinking a Bandit and Clarion in the tank. Just not sure if I want them to go in until there are more fish in the tank. The stupid tangs are aggressive to new fish.

Seriously though, the 800g reef I helped design and construct at the local public aquarium has a single red firefish in with a group of yellow tangs, group of squareback anthias, and group of yellowtail damsels, plus other assorted fish, and "he" is front and center all the time...:p

Always forget about those! Good idea. I do have lids, witnessed a few fish try to jump already.

Might try a Potter's first. Not seeing many good prices on Bandits right now. Gold Flake isn't a bad choice :)

Didn't want too many large angels, main reason I was hoping for just a Bandit and Clarion. I do really like the YB Regals though :)

Understandable, but I view Bandits as only attractive to "fish nerds" (although I am one, so I do like them), and Clarions are just so gawd-awful expensive, I would lie awake at night terribly concerned with its continued well-being...:uhoh3:

Regals look good to anyone... ;)

They are called "Regal" for a reason :)

No! They are just so much more awesome when kept as pair.
Actually, adult regal angels can easily be sexed by body shape (males have a more elongated body) and their gill thorns (the males thorn is much larger than the females). This is more prominent with Red Sea and Indian Ocean "Yellow Bellies" than with the Indo-Pacific "Blue Bellies".
 
Emperors can be moody though like all pomocanthus Angels would be the only caution. Would be better to add towards the end of the fish list

This isn't as easy as it seems. Regals are very challenging at best. Not a lot of people have pairs of Regals because they are challenging. It's not as easy as saying "get a pair". Not that you were the first to suggest this to Peter
