Help with Flower Anemones

I'm not sure, but I think I just got a rock with two flower anemones for free from my buds at the LFS I frequent.

Nobody there knew what it was. At the store it looked like a ricordia mushroom with bright green, thinnish tentacles. While I was drip acclimating it I noticed that the tentacles were moving.
I figured that it wasn't a ricordia at that point and I lengthened the drip time out to two hours. I put it into the tank making sure that it was never exposed to air.

It opened up nicely, and I was amazed to see that it had a deep purple oral disc with pinkish / lavendar tentacles with bright green tips ending in small, pointed bulbs. I was even more surprised to find that there was another much smaller one on the same rock. Not bad for a freebie!!

The larger one is about the size of a quarter, and the smaller one is a bit smaller than a dime. I'm quessing they are Flower Anemones. I could very well be wrong. I wish I could post a picture of them.

If they are Flower Anemonaes, will I be able to keep them in the 8 gallon BioCUBE I just placed them into? It has 32 watts of light and about 12 times flow.

I'd really like to hear from someone with any experience keeping these anemonaes. Thanks in advance.

I know they aren't host anemonaes, but maybe I could keep a porcelain crab and a sexy shrimp with them. That would be too cool for an eight gallon nano!!

Hmm. That actually sounds like it could be mojano. Can you post a pic?

I have a white and a red flower anemone in my tank, the description fits those pretty well...but yeah, a picture would definitely help. I don't really do anything with them, other than occasionally giving them a small bit of silverside when I'm feeding the "real" anemones in the tank.

It's the "tips ending in small, pointed bulbs" that make me wonder. Do flowers have that?

I don't know of any mojanos with green mouths, dark purple oral discs and bright green tentacles. The body form is very similar; but if mojanos were this beautiful, they wouldn't be considered pests.

bureau13: They seemed pretty happy with their mysis shrimp that I experimentally fed them. I think I will switch to something else in for future feedings.

They seem to be doing fine: always open, even at night.

I'd just really like an idea of what kind of anemone ( real or not LOL ) they might be.

I have some beaded/rock anemones under 40 W PC in a 10 gallon nano. I just feed them formula one or other frozen mixes. Mine spit out some babies a year ago that crawled around and relocated.

They're very easy to care for. When I feed them they curl up in a ball for a few minutes while they consume the food. I use a turkey baster. Thaw the food in some tank water removed with the baster. Then I just slurp the thawed slurry up and squirt it on them.

I hope to get some more in the future.

snookhunter: Wow! They sound great! I'll give that a try. So far they like the mysis and any pods that get too friendly.

dc: Thanks for the welcome. My photo skills aren't the greatest, and I still am a total newb about photobucket. I'll read the post about it and get some education.

I did feel bad about making the post without pics. Kinda frustrating for all involved.

BTW- they are still doing great in the tank. A porcelain crab would look so cool with them.

Thanks for the welcome. Actually, I've heard of very colorful (even beautiful) mojanos before. They're not the norm, but maybe you got one of the exceptions.

Also, the anemones in that link are mini carpets. I've got one. They're pretty cool, but they don't sound like what you're describing. They lay flat, more like a riccordia. Tiny tentacles.

rssjsb: That might be kinda cool. A pretty mojano, would definitely be hardy. The only thing that makes me wonder about that is its tentacles. They are almost like a palythoa's with a rounded, blunt tip; rather than the pointed tips that most of the mojanos I have seen have.

I took some pictures. I'll see about uploading them.

And I'm kinda honored that one of my posts finally got you commenting. ( bonding moment )

BTW I really like mini carpets. ( Baiting you to try to get you to post your first pictures..... Maybe you'll beat me to it. LOL )
