Heteractis crispa

catastrofe

Thought I'd share some pictures of my H. crispa. This could almost be the definitive specimen.

My tank is 36" front to back and this baby is close to 18" across. I feed it 4 whole silversides a day and it has yet to reject a feeding.

Enjoy!

:D

My new Crispa....

My new Crispa....

That is a real beauty! I am in the process of trying to nurse mine back to health....had her for 2 weeks and got her to eat her first piece of shrimp last night. Tried a small piece of silverside tonight, but she spit it out after about 10 minutes. I am planning a new 29g tank just for her and the 2 false black percs. Any info on how to get her to eat more and "fatten up a bit before the move?

Beautiful anemone. Beautiful aquarium.
Are there any fish hiding in there?

catastrofe: Beautiful crispa.
macperry:
Is that the same anemone from your id thread? looks different.

that is fantastic as close to a wild specimn as I have seen in captivity congratulations. tou and ron popiel have two beautiful cripas.

what clowns do you have if any

Thanks for the comments.

macperry: I would feed as much and as often (but no more than once a day) as possible. I would also suggest you wait until its tentacle are longer and tapered. IMO, short tentacles are an indication that the anemone has been consuming itself for energy.

Gary: The only fish currently in the tank is a sixline wrasse. I lost a number of fish (including a pair of chrysopterus) due to the recent ice storm. I now own a very expensive generator (if you factor the cost of the fish I lost). I have one of my giganteas on the opposite side of the tank. Looking for a magnifica for the center, then I'm going to attempt a "swarm" of clowns, either true percs or pink skunks.

I have seen pink skunks and clarks hosting a wild crispa in sipadan and mabul
heres the vid sorry about the quality you have you watch carefullysharing

illcssd:That is the same anem a week older that the original thread pics. She decided to move a couple of inches off the sand and wedge her foot in that rock crevice.

catastrofe:Thank you for the feeding suggestion....is there any particular food you would say is the favorite for this type of anem. I have tried: silversides(small pieces), raw shrimp, scallops, and squid. The only thing I can say she ate for certain was the piece of shrimp....I had to stand guard and watch that no one swam over and took it out of her grasp!

Thanks larrydawg.

Macperry: IME, anemones can be picky eaters and different specimens of the same species may prefer different foods. Once I find something an anemone "likes", I stick with it as much for ease as anything else. This crispa rejected krill but accepted silversides, so that's the diet.

:D

catastrofe: Tried to feed good old shrimp soaked in a little Selcon tonight...but no dice. This anem is one picky eater. Might just let her be for a while, and let her grab whatever food she can when I feed the rest of the tank.

55semireef: How do you feed your nems? Yours are probably big and healthy enough to just grab whatever you place near their mouth.....mine isn't quite there yet. Kinda frustrating.

macperry, overtime, your anemones will become accustomed to what you feed them and how you feed them. I at first use to place the food right by their mouth making it easier for them to have the easiest access to it with out them putting much energy into the feeding. Now, I just simply toss a piece of shrimp in my tank and my Clarkii clowns go up and grab it and shove it into the anemone. It does't matter where the food hits the anemone, they will grab it and eventually consume it within seconds. They react incredibly fast to anything that touches them now.

I have had the best results with the shrimp I use. I buy it frozen and then I cut it up into pieces and thaw it out. Then I just put it in my tank and the clowns do the rest of the job. Don't even have to get my hands wet. ;)

silversides seem to be so fishy and gross the nems just love them in my opinion shrimp is not as easy to feed as silverside

55semireef: How long did this process take? My percs don't quite have the hang of it yet. I put the piece of shrimp in the tank....and they just ignore it. I put the piece of shrimp as close to the anems mouth as I can get it....and one of the percs eventually swims over and grabs the shrimp away from the anem! I think I am starting to loose my mind....:o)

catastrofe: I did not mean to hijack your thread....if you have any ideas on how to get my anem to eat, I would really appreciate them.

macperry: No problems. . .

You might try "force feeding" by gently pushing 1/2 a silverside into its mouth. I did this a couple of times during the first week I had this specimen as it wouldn't consume what I placed in its tentacles.

This process also worked with the gigantea I transplanted from my nanocube to the large tank. After the transfer it wouldn't eat on its own whereas prior it was eating daily. It took 1 - 2 weeks but now it's eating on its own.

Hope this helps. . .

:D
