Heteractis Magnifica - Tell me some success stories

Remember I got first dip if he split or you cut him

No, I have not forgotten, you are on a list of one :). I'm nowhere near as courageous as the original owner was, so no cutting planned. Anemone has already grown appreciably in the 3-4 months under my care. In fact, last week, based on appearance I thought it might actually be starting to split; though this week it looks less so.

If this one is still around this weekend, I might pick it up:

My other mag has been going strong since last May. Here it is today in my frag tank:

I promised pictures of my H.magnifica's so here we go...

In Dec of 2013 my heater died. December is a busy month for me and my aquarium is in the basement. There are periods of time where I go several days without looking in on my aquarium because I dont have the time and I dont get a chance to get to the basement.

So I can assume the heater had been out for almost a week before I saw that I had a problem....

Tank temp showed right about 55f with the lights off at night.
All SPS were dead, and all of the anemones were bleached.

By bleached, I mean bone white with no visible zoox in the tentacles or oral disc at all. The foot/base of both anemones remained colored as did the mouth of the brown based anemone. It has always had a yellowish brown mouth. The Purple based anemone never had a color or a tint to the mouth.

I was able to replace the heaters and get the temps up to try and save the anemones.

At this point, I had already sold the Picasso Percs which had been in the 58 breeder with the Purple Based anemone. I moved my Rod's Onyx over to the 58 termporarily.....

The system consisted of a 120 display, a 40 frag tank, a 58 gallon display, all plumbed into a 75 gallon tank used as a common/shared sump with about 50 gallons in it.

Rod's Onyx stayed in the 58 with the purple based purple tipped H.magnifica. The brown based H.magnifica stayed in the 120.

There were no clowns kept with the Brown based H.magnifica in the 120.

On 03-17-2014 I observed some early signs of zoox in the tentacles of the purple based H.magnifica. The tentacles looked "dirty"

The Brown based H.magnifica was showing no signs of improvement.

It should be noted that feeding responses were slowed, but not anywhere near the point that I needed to keep clowns from the tank to protect the purple based anemone. The brown based anemone's feeding responses were markedly slower and it took much longer to feed during this period.

In April, a local reefer who knew I'd kept my magnifica's for a long period of time sold me a gorgeous purple based, purple tipped, green tentacled H.magnifica anemone. It was added to the now stable but mostly fishless 120. Since the reefer's name here on RC is Twiggy, it will be referred to as the Twiggy H.magnifica.

Shortly after introducing the anemone, it ate my Tomini Tang which I'd had since Nov of 07. Figures....some guys have all the luck.

I have the pics of it regurgitating the majority of the fish..... but havent resized them to fit here. The Tomini was pretty big, about 4 inches overall. I'm surprised the anemone was able to ingest it....

The purple based H.magnifica was beginning to really improve in appearance. The brown based H.magnifica was not. Both were being fed regularly, but only the purple had clowns in the tank with it.

In May, the clowns got yanked from the 58 due to an onset of ich....they were treated in a hospital tank with copper and the display system was fallow for several months.

In June the brown based H.magnifica began to show signs of zoox regrowth/repopulation. Sadly, I dont have pics of the very early stages...thought I took them, but cant seem to find them.

Here is the brown based anemone as of June 14th 2014:

Purple based anemone continued to improve was pretty much back to 100%:

Here are all three anemones as of 04-19-2015:

So as of today I've had the brown based H.magnifica since March 1oth, 2006, (9 years), the purple based H.magnifica since Nov 3rd 2010, (4.5 years), and the Twiggy H.magnifica for right about a year (Early April 2014...dont recall the exact date).

I've made some changes to my system and I'm basically rebooting the 120 and will shutting down and removing the 40 and the 58 from my system. The "plan" is to house all three anemones with both pairs of clowns, (Rod's Onyx Percs and Black Ocellaris) in the 120. I'm putting the anemones and clowns on the extreme far ends of the tanks and hope to keep them in their respective anemones......we'll see how it works out.

We all know what a "plan" is, right? A list of things that dont happen....

I've got several months before I get the 120 properly cycled and started over and stable enough to move anemones and clowns.

I plan to start with the Twiggy H.magnifica and the brown based H.magnifica first and then move the purple H.magnifica and the Rod's Onyx over afterwards....

We'll see how it all shakes out...I do seriously think it will work out if I do it right.

March of this year was 10 years with my brown based H.magnifica. It's still doing fine and I'm still in the process of consolidating my system down to the 120.
Water is in the 120 and I used a bottle of Dr Tim's all in one and currently have 6 damsels in the tank for cycling. It will still be several months before I'm able to move any of my H.magnifica's over to the 120.

Brown based H.magnifica - 10 years in my care. 1 split for unknown reasons.
Purple based H.magnfica anemone - 4 years and 4 months in my care.
Twiggy H.magnifica anemone - 1 year 11 months in my care.

The Twiggy H.magnifica anemone has gotten very large for my pans and I'm now wondering if I'll actually be able to house all three anemones in the 120.

I'll take pictures today when the lights come on.

I've had my magnifica for half a year now. It wasn't in bad shape when I got it, but it still wasn't happy. I did treat it until it started to look healthy, and it has been doing great ever since.

I've only had this mag for a month and a half now, but it's doing very well, staying right where I put it(I purposely scaped my tank specifically for a mag)
It did deflate when I got it and I treated it in cipro, responded to treatment fairly fast, treated a little over a week and then into display.
My clowns took to it immediately, rarely leave it.

Is it on a pie plate?

I don't know if it's a pie plate... I know I bought this plate specifically for an H. magnifica back in 2008, but I didn't know about antibiotic treatments and it died. I held onto the plate for 7 years until I was ready to try again at a magnifica. I'm glad I did more research and was prepared.

Anyway, it's just a plate I found at a dollar store that has a wide rim. I liked it because it was wide, a little concaved, but not too much like a bowl. I thought the magnifica would like a somewhat curved surface. BTA's like to anchor their feet in caves so I thought my mag would like something in between. This also keeps the base of the foot from being hit directly by currents from pumps.
