Hippo swallow hook. What antibiotics?

Hippo swallow hook. What antibiotics?

In the end, I hope your tang makes it out ok, I'm sure your intent was good, maybe just something many of us wouldn't try. I'd be pretty bummed if too if I were you, hell I feel bummed anytime a fish of mine dies.

Good luck!

I hate tearing all the rock out of my tank to catch a fish but when I do that I can reaquascape my tank so there is a benefit from all of the work involved with tanking my 400lbs of rock out...

A fisherman has a little implement that he can insert into a fish's mouth and get a hook out: http://www.amazon.com/Mustad-MSTD-1...sr=8-9-spell&keywords=fishhook+removal+sports

But on a very small fish it is problematic. My advice would be to contact a veterinarian and describe the problem. A vet has a lot of surgical instruments with which he might be able to get it out of the mouth the way it went in: a long q-tip might do it, IF the guy knows fish anatomy and if you could bring the fish in.

I've kept fish caught on hook and line before. If they die from the hook it is usually within the first couple of days. If your fish is eating, it is a good sign. It will stay in the stomach until it is dissolved from the stomach acids. If caught in the mouth or esophagus, it will take much longer and infection could possibly set in. I would only treat for an infection if you suspect one. The odds are low if your water is pristine. I would not suggest removing it unless A. you see it, B. feel comfortable sedating the fish, and C. have the proper tools to remove it like microsurg forceps. I've use them to remove hard to reach isopods it larger rays.

The hook tactic does work. I used it, so I can't knock you, to pull a large nasty eel out of someones take before. It needs to be sized appropriately to avoid swallowing and as mentioned before, the barb should be removed.

Thanks alprazo. She's doing gr8 so I'm just standing by. Eating like the pig she is. Color is good and breathing is normal. No distress. I'll keep you guys posted.

as a fisherman myself i would say it will dissolve because hooks are made to dissolve it has to do with the stomach acid and the water.

The hook will dissolve just wait it out you never try to remove a swallowed hook . I would not be shocked to see a full recovery from the accident Best of luck.

still cracks me up you went fishing in your tank. reminds me of A Fish Called Wanda when Kevin Kline eats that angel in front of his owner to get him to talk... :)

Just wanted to update those interesting in an outcome. Fish is doing amazing. Beautiful colors, eating and overall happy.Looks she's gonna be fine.

I can't believe how many people are shocked over him using a hook in his tank. I guess most must be new around here or simply dont read much around here. I couldn't count how many times I've seen this mentioned on these forums and in all those threads about using a hook I never saw read people jumping on the person suggesting the method. I know I have had to try it in the past, didn't work for me. Anyway glad to hear you got the fish you needed to get out and hope he recovers fine.

To the OP im glad your fish is well ..im not here to say what op did was right or wrong .As a newbie to the saltwater hobbie ,I have in my inexperience placed a rogue fish in my tank a damsel , didn't know didn't know about the forums I didn't have any mentors to help me .I go back to the fish store I got him from I ask the experienced fishkeeper how do I get him out of my tank ,the man opens up a drawer hands me a pack of fish hooks and line .in the same breath he says if u don't like that way this is how I do it ,pulls out a sharp pencil and a rubber band and shoots it across the room as if to spear it .we are quick to criticize we all make mistakes some worse then others .just a side note I still have that damsel in my upgraded tank and with no issues .
