Hollywood Stunner Chalice - Which Family is it in? Echinophyllia, Oxypora, Mycedium,

that Fish Guy

Frag Swap Crusader!
I am having a lot of difficulty with Chalices and they are my favorite coral by far so I definetly want more.

But I do not want to keep killing them and they cost a fortune too.

One of the very few Chalices that have done well for me is the Hollywood Stunner.

I know that Chalices are known as notoriously slow growers but the HS thrives for me and grows very fast.

So I am looking for other Chalices in the same family as the Hollywood Stunner Chalice so I can successfully keep them and get them to grow.

So what family are they in?

Echinophyllia
Echinopora
Oxypora
Mycedium
Pectinia
Physophyllia
Echinomorpha

Are there any other notable Chalices in the same family that I should look for?

Before you go looking for other chalices, what are the parameters of your tank? What type of lighting? What kind of flow? A pic would help also. Every chalice I've ever had tended to grow like weeds, even the high priced ones. I would think there's something else going on.

Temperature 78
Salinity 1.026
PH 8.2
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0
Phosphate 0.13 (Yes, I know people will say this is high but it is the lowest the tank has ever been. It was always over 1 PPM before and I never had this hair algae or burgundy algae so why after taking out 90 percent of the phosphate that feed the algae and I getting algae that I did not have before)?
Calcium 450
Magnesium 1350
Alkalinity 12

If you look at the threads you have going, it should become clear. Your tank can't stabilize if you are doing 70% water changes every week. That's way too much. You also seem to be dosing a few things you can't measure. If you want to do weekly water changes, do 10 to 15%. No more than that. Give your tank a month or two before adding more corals or fish. Don't keep adding all the excess things you've been putting in, and just get the Cal, Alk and Mag to stabilize.

Don't dose anything you can't test for! (except vit C) lol

HS is unkillable. I even tried a piece in my FOWLR just to see if it would work there. My butterfly liked it so I removed it and put the almost totally eaten frag back into my frag tank. Full recovery within a couple weeks you wouldn't know anything happen.

Maybe an issue with too much light, all my others are in low light or even shaded areas. I have notices the HS can take high light easily.

To answer your question, look for the ones with thinner skeletons they should be easier and faster growers. One on DD that have similar thickness (at least by looking at the pics) would be the blue chalice (echinopora) that are normally in their aquacultured section. I got that and a rasberry eye (mycedium) coming tomorrow morning ;)

I have close to two dozen Chalices, and can't keep a Hollywood Stunner to save my life.

My numbers are the same. Aside from the Po4 mine always runs high, today it was over .6 yet the acros are looking great still.

I'll be changing phosban tomorrow. lol
