Holy mother of ....

Anyone who is willing to pay in excess of $1000 for a fish must be a little bit simple. You guys need help. :hmm6:

What do you own thats you paid more than $1000 for? Because I would GUARANTEE you, someone here would find it trivial, unneeded, and contrite. Most likely me. I cant fathom that people would spend money on TVs, stereos, suits, shoes, jewelry, furniture, etc etc etc.

Not that it needs further discussion, but the hobby itself is a niche market and essentially a luxury. People own nice watches, drive luxury vehicles, buy jewelery, etc. when they could get away with either purchasing a cheaper alternative or abstaining entirely. The fish posted are absolutely incredible. Unfortunately I cannot afford them, but if I had the means to, I would definitely not think twice about purchasing one.

What's great about this forum is that there are people who are passionate about the hobby and are willing to share pictures and experiences with fish that one may not personally be able to acquire for whatever reason. It's unfortunate that people drop by into threads and negatively discuss the price of a given fish or coral or whatever. There have been numerous examples of people who become reluctant to share their passion because they would rather not deal with people making assumptions about their intellect based on how they choose to spend their money.

I had never heard of this fish, but i just checked it out on youtube and various other sites. It looks like another yellow fish to me. If you can justify paying 10 times the price of a yellow tang, or even 40 times the price of a banana wrasse, you must be a lot better off than me. I think all you are paying for is the rarity of this fish, and if it really is THAT rare, maybe it shouldn't be available to buy at all, and there is only one way to remedy that, leave it at the LFS and let him lose his money.

Locust - do yourself a favor and post your naysaying elsewhere. Asking why someone would pay for rare fish is like asking why someone would. Pay for a picasso or very expensive wine or exotic cars.

If you don't think the fish is spectacular then fine, but I happen to own one of those fish and I am nowhere close to being simple. I buy dish because I love them. NO MATTER HOW MUCH IT COSTS.

Please don't provoke

Thank you Chris!

For some of us, it is way more than just a fish. People have passions in this hobby that some may not understand. There are people who are in the hobby and people who live for the hobby. For some of us, searching out extremely rare fish or corals is a love of ours, even if sometimes it takes years to do so. So when you do, the price does not honestly matter.

If you can't see the difference between Odontanthias fuscipinnis and Zebrasoma flavescens or any other fish. Then obviously your interest in this hobby is limited. This is not at all meant as an insult. Personally, I could never appreciate a $4000 bottle of wine. Not because a difference between that bottle and a $40 bottle of wine doesn't exist, but merely because my palette can't appreciate it. It's pretty silly to insult people who can appreciate the rare gems in a hobby that they're passionate about.

Also for what it's worth the reason many rare fish are so expensive is not because they are rare in nature. They are expensive because they are incredibly difficult to collect due to the depths at which they are found and thus require very experienced divers to obtain them.

Ok have it your way! You don't need to get so defensive about it. Why do you feel insulted? If you are so sure you are doing the right thing, then what reason do you have to feel insulted?

I guess i can't appreciate the difference. If all three fish were the same price, i have to say i would still probably take the banana wrasse. It sounds like i should get into the diving business!

Re-read what I wrote. I'm not defensive at all and definitely not insulted. I already stated I don't own any of the fish being discussed. I'm just pointing out that your narrow-minded viewpoint is generally unappreciated by the people who do own these rare fish. And that it's generally strange to arbitrarily draw a line in the sand on what is excessive and what isn't, when this hobby is by nature just one frivolous expense after another.

Anyway I'm done discussing this, and I'll just leave it at agreeing to disagree.

The thing that kills me is there are quite a few rare fish collectors on here that almost never post thier tanks because the price comments almost always follow. I just want to see the goods

Often we find ourselves fleeced against our will.
For example when one is forced to pay an excessive price for something basic and fundamental to life like an Enron generated electric bill , a cleverly contrived mortgage agreement or a penalties and interest creation of the IRS that grows exponentially.........well this life is by nature just one frivolous expense after another.

Me too. I can understand someone spending lots of disposable income on an exquisite fish or coral a lot easier than I can fathom someone doling out $$$$$ on a luxury car or a Hummer that's basically just a fancier version of the box on wheels that's my economy car--but since in either case, it's not my money they're spending, I don't care. Somebody else pays the premium price, and I get to drool over the fish. ;)

Divers die collecting rare fish and sometimes the gas and boat expenses are crushing...especially when the expedition doesn't pan out.

The outter GBR [ Australia] for example costs over a $1,000.00 to just go out to.
Boat and expenses eat up all the first fish and then they gamble the rest on the weather.
There are a potential 10k threads to be had on the collecting side that you seldom see here. The costs, the risks the danger is always there.
