honeymoon snorkeling ideas?

I'm getting married in October but we cant take our honeymoon until January (we're both in school still) and we REALLY want to go snorkeling. Our first thought was the great barrier reef, then we woke up and remembered that we dont have the money for that! Anyone have any ideas where some good, safe, picturesque snorkeling would be? (preferably near an all-inclusive resort)

caribbean did some snorkleing there last yr loved it. did it through a cruise tour i reccomend it..and the cruises arent that expensive. cheaper than all inclusive resorts.plus you get to see different places.

we honeymooned in Aruba.
Aruba is below the hurricane zone.
It's very affordable and (among other things) there's some great snorkling/diving readily available.
I found a remote beach and my wife set up a lounge chair while I spent the entire day snorkling wherever I wanted with NOBODY ELSE AROUND. It was great. I could tell you a million stories.

I will be going to Hawaii for my honeymoon this year. It looks like there is tons of spots to do some good snorkeling!! Price isn't too bad either. I priced out a trip to the Big Island for 8 nights and the total with airfare, hotel and car was $3500.

Since I was roughly age 10, my parents tapped into my love of the ocean...and when they passed on, I continued it. Here are some highly recommended suggestions:

1. Hawaii. If you want beginner snorkeling, Oahu. Hanauma Bay. It's free and you can take a bus from Waikiki Beach for 2 bucks. It does get crowded, but lots of great fish there. The Big Island. Black Sand Beach near Kalapana is great, especially if you like giant sea turtles...they are all over. On the far North Eastern Side is more intermediate to expert snorkeling...and if you choose to go there on your own, you will admittedly be violating the contracts of car rental....but Kealakekua Bay is extraordinary. Kauai, Napali Beach is another protected ecosystem....teaming with life.

2. Cayman Islands. I bought Frommers guide and went to all the remote locations where sometimes we were the only ones there. Grand Cayman has a barrier reef that is absolutely incredible...Cayman Brac has a ton of places that only the locals know about.

3. Belize. the second largest barrier reef is there. Brain coral...the smallest one i saw was the size of beach ball....and some you could hide behind. I sometimes forgot to breath.

4. Cozumel or Cancun. Gorgeous. I recommend Cozumel over Cancun because it is less of a tourist trap in regards to snorkeling.

5. Costa Maya. Very new to tourists...and there is a coral reef there that is brimming with huge starfish...all different kinds...I actually befriended one for about 6 hours in the water because he wouldn't let go of me....that's another story.

6. My best suggestion, along with what Will said, is TAKE A CRUISE. Totally 100% best bang for your buck. We are planning on going in August. Carnival has balcony rooms for 639pp. It includes EVERYTHING. Shore excursions are additional, but get yourself a couple of guides and do it yourself. I highly recommend this. It is stress free and you will feel like a King and Queen while you are on the ship. If you can get the cruise that is Cayman, Cozumel and Belize...you will have the time of your life.

I think I would steer clear of any trips to Mexico. The government is advising that no one should be going down there right now because of all the drug violence!!

don't get me started. Cozumel and Cancun are not only exceptionally safe, but extremely kind and supportive to their main income which is the tourist industry. Might I also add...if you are planning on either of these....a MUST visit is the Mayan ruins either Chintza Yinzta or Tulum. I loved Tulum because it was right on the ocean but the ruins are much better at the other.

Alot of the places that have mentioned above you can get there by cruise and book a snorkel excursion right on the boat or even b4 you leave. court gimmie a call if you like i got a great travel agent took excellent care of us on our last 3 cruises we booked with her 1st class all the way!!!

So are you saying one should assume that the warning below that was issued by the State Department is bogus??

""”Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Cozumel: Cancun is a fairly large city, approaching 500,000 inhabitants, with increasing reports of crime. Crimes against the person, such as rape, commonly but not exclusively occur at night or in the early morning hours, and often involve alcohol and the nightclub environment. Therefore, it is important to travel in pairs or groups, be aware of surroundings, and take general precautions."

that warning can be found for any country where tourists go even here in the US. locals see tourists as easy targets . therefore our government feels the need to warn the unwary. If you have a good head on your shoulders you should be good. besides if you go with a cruise ship you are usually outta there b4 the criminal element is out. Court my vote is a crusie relativly worry free.

Hmm, when you put it that way, it makes sense. Travel anywhere can be bad if you don't use common sense.

Back on topic, sorry for the stray! :D

South pacific would be my first pick. But Caribbean a little closer to home, easier to get to and cheaper. My favorite places are Cozumel, grand cayman and Belize. Belize was probably the best diving in the area.
