You need a barb with ribs. The tube goes back behind the ribs and then a couple of zip ties hold it in place. One before the rib, and another after.

Out of curiosity what do you recommend instead of barb fittings?

Sometimes you can't avoid them, and for lower flow applications like a carbon or GFO reactors barbed fittings are fine, but for higher flow/higher pressure applications like a return pump, I prefer a regular PVC fitting with flexible PVC. There's less resistance and it's more secure. Most pumps I've used have a standard thread so you can either use a standard fitting or a barbed adapter. It also makes me nervous having a barbed adapter on a pump flowing 1000 GPH, but that may just be me.

FWIW, I replaced a pair of 1" barbed fittings on my return line with regular 1" fittings and got an extra 80 gph of flow
