Sometimes you can't avoid them, and for lower flow applications like a carbon or GFO reactors barbed fittings are fine, but for higher flow/higher pressure applications like a return pump, I prefer a regular PVC fitting with flexible PVC. There's less resistance and it's more secure. Most pumps I've used have a standard thread so you can either use a standard fitting or a barbed adapter. It also makes me nervous having a barbed adapter on a pump flowing 1000 GPH, but that may just be me.
