HotHotHot's 220 Tank Log

HotHotHot

Obligate Coral Killer
Hi All,

I'm starting this thread to chronicle the progress of my new 220 gal semi-custom tank.

Here is the equipment list so far:

Lee-Mar flat-polished, euro braced, dual overflow 220 gal glass tank (Due in about 3 weeks)
6 holes drilled for a closed loop

30" oak stand and 12" canopy (Due in about 3 weeks)

OceansMotions 4-way (No ship date yet)

Sequence 1000 Series 3200 return pump (Due 11/14)

Sequence ReefFlow Dart closed loop pump (Due 11/14)

PanWorld 150PS skimmer pump (Due 11/14)

Barr Aquatic SK1220 Beckett skimmer (Due soon)

Barr Aquatic CR1200 calcium reactor (Currently in use)

Lighting - TBD
I'll take suggestions on this. I'm looking at DE HQI systems 13-14K bulbs.

More will follow along with pics as things progress.

Hi again.

Some minor changes and some observations.

I'm only having 5 holes drilled for the closed loop. One 2" drain, and 4 1.5" returns.

The canopy will be 16" instead of 12" so I can raise and lower the lights.

The pumps arrived on time, and the OM 4-way arrived today.

The OM 4-way is beautifully made. Excellent fit and finish, and the company was a pleasure to work with.

The Sequence 1000 is HUGE. I can only imagine how big their larger pumps are. I'm hoping this doesn't cramp me for space under the stand. I'm going to have to size the sump appropriately.

The Dart and Pan-World are about the size I expected and also look very well made. I know some of the early Darts had the clear-blue volute which were prone to cracking. The new black PVC volute looks very sturdy.

I also can't believe how much the plumbing parts are going to cost. :eek2: It's just plastic guys!

I'll start posting pics once the tank and stand arrive. The projected date is the 1st week in December.

Thanks "Z." I gotta ask, 350, 240, what? I've got an '04 Max.

I agree about Brent's equipment. Sounds like he's taken on an apprentice, so things should start ramping up, reducing lead times.

I forgot to mention that I ordered an Aquatronica controller, which may arrive this week from Aquarium Obsessed. Definitely by next week.

I also just received my lighting. I decided on 2 Reef Optix III Plus pendants, 250 watt 14K Phoenix bulbs, and a Blue Wave VII ballast. I test fired them and all was well. A nice pleasing blue. They should look great. Thanks ReefGeek.com.

I should also be receiving my Savko order soon.

I'm still shopping for a sump. I really like Melev's 80 gal model. I'll have to wait and see if that size will fit, or if I'll need to scale it down a little.

I will say that all of the vendors I've chosen have been great to work with. Thanks MarineDepot, CustomAquatic, BarrAquatic, ReefGeek, OceansMotions, and AquariumObsessed. Quite the Canadian contingent Eh!

Is the Sequence 1000 on the same floor as the tank? I had a dart as my return pump and a 1000 for me closed loop, the flow was so high from the 1000 that I had to trade it back in for another dart...my tank is a 240...sounds like a great project...I love my OM 4 way too...and my tank is from Aquarium Obsessed...good luck and keep us posted...you can checlk out my set up as i am working on it by clicking to my website...

camarojweed,

It's on the same floor. On a closed loop with zero head I could see where that would move a lot of water.

I'm looking at about 16' of head with bends and valves and a manifold. I hope this works out.

Very nice setup too. How do you like the light movers?

Ed

Best 30 dollars i ever spent...the light rails worked out better than I had hoped...

I am glad I used true unions on the outlet of the pump, it was a quick change out...good luck and have fun...

Quick update:

I received my Barr Aquatic SK1220 skimmer on Saturday. Brent never fails to impress.

The thing is built like a tank. Execellent fit and finish.

And yes I know ...

I bought a 220g fish only setup last month, and I'm looking to convert it to a reef system. I'll be tagging along on this thread, as well as starting one of my own soon.

 That's what this is all about. I've gotten invaluable information from so many members on this board. I'm hoping to start giving back.

Still waiting on my Savko order and my Aquatronica. Hopefully by the end of the week.

That sounds awesome! I saw your other question and I don't think the LeeMar will come with low iron glass unless you pay extra for it. That's pretty weak of the LFS for not being able to give you a clear answer. If its not too late I'd upgrade. Although I think LeeMar's glass isn't as green as some others, its still green. I've had a couple starphire tanks and on my website is a pic of the difference - the sides and front were starphire and the bottom is regular. HUGE difference, ya pay well into the five digits after a tank is up and running, just to color all your livestock green. ;-)

This manifold will be on the return pump and will supply my Phosban reactor, Ca reactor, acclimation, 1 spare 3/4" for a future chiller if needed, and 1 spare 1/2" port.

I'm hoping the stand and tank arrive this week, so things should start to move along.

OK, now we're cookin'

The tank and stand arrived in town on Wednesday. I had the stand delivered first so I could do some prep work like mounting fans and putting the electrical in.

On with the show...

The tank will be delivered on Monday, so more pics during the plumbing will follow.

Well the tank is progressing well. I'm currently waiting for a custom sump, at which point I can finish the plumbing and wet-test.

I put 1/2" of foam down since the tank is flat-bottomed.

I built a return mainifold to distribute the flow.
