Where are we to pick up? I live in Oxnard so I'm aways. Roughly how much to ship? Is a 1/5hp enough?

pick up can be either san gabriel valley or orange county. i hav relatives in northridge who i see often. i can leave the chiller there if its closer for u.

check jbjlighting.com site to size your chiller

And the 1/4 HP is loud. The others may be also, I don't know

chillers are equiped with blowers and compressors so you have to expect some noise. i dont think you can find a silent chiller. i've personally seen and heard pacifc coast, aqua logic and aqua medic and jbj is by far the quietest. like u, this is my personal experience.

Fmellish - First of all, thanks for all the documentation you have provided on your tank build and maintenance. Its a great resource.

For those of you following along with chiller experience:

Does the chiller "kick on" when necessary and remain quiet when not running?

Or do you have your chiller running certain hours of the day (i.e., on a timer)?

Another dumb question - when the temp drop below an accepted range, do any chillers also heat the water?

I havnt heard of a chiller on timer. but i could be wrong. I think its like regular refrigerator if water gets warm enough it kicks in.

ATTENTION

i just want to be open with everyone on some developments with this group buy.

i received a message from a fellow so cal reefer that he has a friend who is just starting a fish business. this friend is offering a slightly lower price than what we have. actually some units will cost more by a few dollars and some will save a few dollars.

my response to the message below and right under is his original message.

thanks XXX. unfortunately we're too far involved with this vendor. they've been willing to work with us from the beginng even though they had no idea how many units were to be purchased. the principle of dropping them now for a few bucks doesnt sit well with me.

thank you again for the offer but i will respectfully decline at this time.

have you ordered the chillers yet? Only reason I ask is b/c I have a good source for these units (yes it's legit and ALL units are new and sealed). I checked his prices and he quoted me as follows, it may be worth it b/c it could save the group buy a few bucks ... let me know:

PRICES LISTED HERE. NOT SURE IF I'M ALLOWED TO POST

Let me know if this helps you any. For these prices, I will personally deliver the chillers to you (i'm trying to help a good friend get his business up and going). Just let me know ...

i apologize for making a personal decision for the group. i just have some ethical issues in dropping our current vendor. they've worked with us since the beginning and its not fair for someone to step in because they think we might actually get a good response. i dont think we'll receive this offer if we only had 3 or 4 committed parties.

please let me know what you think. i dont mean this to be a threat but i will have to bow out of this group buy if you think this offer should be entertained; immediate refund will be given to all payments.

thanks.

EDIT: i still need the chiller at a great price so i will still CONSIDER joining the group buy :). just dont want to organize and deal with a new vendor.

I agree with phatphiser, lets finish what we started here and get the chillers from the original vendor. I'm sure the original vendor has gone out of the way to do this for us and it's not right to cancel for a few bucks. The current prices compared to retail are killer prices to begin with. To the person that suggested the new vendor.. I think it's nice that you want to help a friend out and I hope that he/she may be considered for the next group chiller buy as the hot summer approaches - I'm sure there will be plenty of ppl interested.

i say you stick with your original vendor. when i tried the jbj group buy a while ago, i got all these responses about lower prices and blah blah blah. i think you're doing a great job!

I agree we should stick with the original vendor. I also think we should set a date in the near future to end the group buy. This will force some people to make a decision one way or another and allow us who have paid for our chillers to receive them soon. If we can get the 12 needed for an additional price break that would be a good reason to submit the order also.

I have sent payments for 1/5 and 1/3. If you need me to upgrade what's the price differents? I'm really not into loud, I've got a PCX55 that has to go because it's too loud. Pickup in Northridge sounds great. Let me know.

Billy

Less than $50 to ugprade from the 1/5 to 1/4 if we have a total of 12 units of the 1/4 or more.

Fmellish, 84 to 76 in 30 minutes - isn't that going to temp. shock your tank inhabitants?
Nice to know the chiller works well - looking forward to mine soon too.

Yes, everyone was quite sick for a little bit. My clowns tried to swim into their anemone's mouth. My tang turned white and translucent and my Xenia shriveled up.

I was extremely worried and cranked up my heater to raise the temp back up.

Everything seems fine today.

To clarify on the noise, I think the chiller was so loud because it must have gone into full operation to get the water from 84 to the 76. Now that the water is at 78 the chiller is still on, but in a much lower mode and it making less heat and noise. So it's not an on/off type of thing. It's like the gas pedal on a car. It's analog. The chiller seems to rev up or down depending on the requirements being placed on it. It is now running in low gear (if you will), and it's very quiet in this mode where it is just ever so slightly chilling the water to maintain the existing temp.

Cheers
Josh
