How are Cali Reefers Coping

I was wondering how all the California reefers where doing and how they were getting their tanks thru this brutal heat wave. I'd love to hear some of the invovative ways you guys are keeping your reefs up and running. As a side note I was bummed to hear about Hugo's loss.

i dont live in Cal. but we do get hot in Tenn. 2 weeks ago it was 100+ for 3 days. i work nights and dont leave work untill 3:00, sometimes 4:30 A.M. it has been 80-84f every morning for over a month. earlie this year, electricity was out due to a storm. (tornado) i got 1 gallon zip-locks filled with ice and placed them in the tanks. i worked very well. make sure they dont leak first by adding tap water. if you leave some TW in the bag w/the ice. the ice melts slower. REEF-ON!!!

Hi all from socal... 90+ at my jewelry store today... My friend james in HB just had a chiller problem, and some of his sps are dyin.. I myself put a fan in my garage to blow on my chiller.... I am keeping temp at 81-82.. but chiller runs all day... backup battery powered air pumps on the way in case of power outage.... scary right now.

Heat in CA. What heat?

Seriosly though, last saturday it was a little warm. It was 77-78 degrees at my house. I wondered how hot it was outside and looked at the thermometer, 116.7 in the shade! The tank has been running between 80-81. My chiller (two $7 clip-on fans from Target) has been running 24/7. Unfortunately leaving the AC on last month cost me more than I ever imagined. The bill was so high I decided to replace the 3 year old filters on the A/C intakes (oops).

Temps in Dublin were 100F+ July 16-26. The tank never went past 80F. I cool the tank with fans but only during the MH lighting period. The house was kept at 77F during the day all the way down to 70F by morning. You just do not want to see the electric bill I got yesterday.

What was yours palmer59. I used to say I had never got an electric bill over $200, then I said I have never got one over $300, now I can only say I never got a bill in the $300s or $400s.

I'm from Cali. The heatwave here has proved to be an interesting battle. It seems not only are we having trouble fighting heatwaves, but due to increase AC and Fan uses some cities are experiencing blackouts. I don't run a chiller. I'm just getting barely getting by with my fans. I was fortunate enough to invest in a controller (Reefkeeper 2) before the summer so I would set the lights to shut off at a specific temperature. I have also shortened the photoperiod of my tank and set them to turn on later in the day that way the cool nights will complement my fans. I use the JBJ ATO to keep up with the evaporation and since I travel a lot I need things pretty much automated. I have not yet experienced any losses, crosses fingers. On the upside my zoos are multiplying quickly and the gonipora that I am trying to resurrect is starting to show signs of healing despite it being a delicate species to house. No bleaching in the SPS and no losses. Hopefully I can ride this out for the remainder of the hot season.

A tad over $800.00 normally during summer $400-450 range. Stove and water heater are gas.

$800... please tell me thats not dollars....

To tell you the truth I thought it was going to be closer to $1000.00 since it has been fairly hot and somewhat humid for most of the month. This is the highest power bill I ever had. The tank was design for low power consumption (at least compared to the 180G) using "Tunze Streams" for circulation and an "Uno" series pump for the return, the skimmer is fed via gravity directly from the over flow with a 90W pump to drive the injectors. The MH (3-400W) lights are on for 8 hours per day, that is the only place that I might be able to cut power some more by going with 250W instead but I do not know if that would be enough on a 280G.

tank has been between 80-83 these days. No chiller just fans in the canopy and in the stand. I think my house stays fairly cool for some reason, we dont run the AC all day either.

it might help that i have my lights turn on at 330 and off at 1130.

In Sac. it's been above 100 for what two weeks now...Only way my tank has been surviving is with the AC on...I keep it at 90 when I'm not there about 85 when I am at work or away...tank has been staying between 77--82.

Not in CA, but the coolest day we have had here in western ok has been around 98 the last 3 weeks or so. The rest where more towards 104-108 range...

im just thankful that i invested in a 1HP chiller and nothing smaller, the heat here in Fresno is brutal. 107-110 daily for like the past week!

the chiller is working over time, but it's pulling us through so far.

I installed a chiller just in time, cranked up the 4 canopy fans, and sump fan. Even with the garage temp at upper 90s, which is where my sump is, the tank never went over 81.0F :D On the hottest day here in Dublin I believe it reached over 115F, so decided to not run my halides for the day. I was trying to do my part a little and help out with the energy crisis :D We had no rolling black outs (thankfully), but I'm going to invest in a small generator just in case.

it got to mid/high 80s in SF, my tank is downstairs and that room never got more than 78F (although it felt a whole lot cooler since upstairs hit 90s, funny how that works), my problem was that my sump/refugium is on my sun porch which did get upwards of 94F. No A/C here though, so it took a large fan blowing over the sump tank never got above 82.7 (I did turn the tank lights off at this time.)

What we have not said so far is that the weather has cooled considerably as of yesterday and today.

San Francisco temp's has been around 65 (yesterday and today) and it was drizzling this morning (which is normal SF summer weather).

Many people were caught off guard, when the hot triple digit weather dragged on for more than the few days.

All of my tanks have faired well, but I am battling flatworms and not heat at the moment ; )
